Steve Martin is returning to Chief Inspector Clouseau's trenchcoat as he prepares to start work on Pink Panther 2. The film will be directed by Harald Zwart, who is responsible for bringing the world Agent Cody Banks.
Once upon a time, Steve Martin was the funniest man on Earth, doing amazingly inventive stand-up and bringing silly comedy to an echelon it had never seen before or since. In the meantime, Peter Sellers was injecting the original Pink Panther movies with some amazing work, proving himself to be one of the best character comedians of all time.
Sadly, however, Martin inhabiting Sellers' shoes, in this particular case, is just a bad idea. The first movie was completely insipid, and there's no reason to think that a watered-down sequel won't be even worse. Here's an idea: Steve Martin should go away for a while. And they should re-release the original Pink Panther films, to show exactly why.
Except for that one with Ted Wass. That really sucked.
