Metallica is finishing up pre-production on its next album and will enter the studio in March to begin tracking with producer Rick Rubin.
The band has about 25 new songs according to drummer Lars Ulrich, who credits jamming in the tuning room every night before they went onstage on the St. Anger tour. They will skinny the final tracklist down to 12 or 14 songs.
"The amount of material is a little overwhelming," Ulrich recently told Revolver magazine, "so we're trying to be as self-critical as possible. It's great with Rick, because he doesn't really have any baggage with us. He just comes in and says, 'That's great. That's not so great.'"
The band also recently revealed on its blog that they will take a break from recording for some European festival dates in June.
