Guild Wars 2 Will Feature Player-Created Quest Chain

It's one thing for game developers to listen to their fans, but the makers of Guild Wars 2 are took that idea a step further by calling on fans to actually create part of their game. The company used their panel at Pax this year to invite the Guild War faithful behind-the-scenes of their development and letting them create an event chain for the upcoming game. Some version of the events voted on by Pax's panel-goers will end up in the finished game.

NBA 2K11 Preview

If you're anything like us here at G4, the phrase "playing sports" has less to do with an outdoor, athletic experience than it does with an all-night, indoor, online jam session with the latest EA title. With that in mind, we recently had the chance to check out some of NBA 2K11:

"Gameplay elements have been improved. Defense is even more refined than ever before, allowing you to be a lockdown defender in a basketball videogame, which is, until this point, almost completely unheard of. There's new dribbling that allows you to take opponents off the dribble in new and exciting ways. New animations around the bucket change the look of the game, too."

Stop playing with your balls and pick up a controller, but only after reading our hands-on preview of NBA 2K11.

Ever wonder about the sound work that goes into a video game? Soundworks Collection profiles the masters of sound from movies and video games, and this time they've produced a mini-documentary about everything that went into creating the sound for Halo: Reach. They profile the audio team, including Marty O'Donnell, and it's worth both a watch and a listen. Step inside and learn how games are crafted for your ears, not just your eyes.

Marty is the man, and i love how even though they were just in a sound test room they still had to tea bag :)

Has The Hobbit Found Its Bilbo Baggins?

The sporadic, almost contradictory reports that we seem to get regarding the beleaguered film adaptation of The Hobbit seems to be shifting its focus to casting. After the recent rumor about ancillary character Radagast The Brown, it seems that the folks over at New Line and MGM may have their sights set on main character Bilbo Baggins. With his name having been in the dream-casting mix for about half a decade, the UK's Martin Freeman has found himself in the latest rumor spotlight. According to Entertainment Weekly, he is apparently not only a favorite by the studio to take the coveted starring role, but it seems the entire schedule may end up shifting to accommodate him, should he take it.

It's hard not to laugh when school yard acrobats plummet to the earth, camels get tickled mercilessly, and old ladies totally humiliate would-be robbers. In fact, we believe it's impossible, which is why we've filled today's ATN with exactly those things. It's a chucklefest, folks!

NHL 11 Review: "Pure Win"

sjohnson
6 Comments Posted Yesterday 12:16 PM - By Stephen Johnson

NHL 11

Hockey, time, baby! G4's own Michael "Penalty Box" D'Alonzo has played the hell out of NHL 11, and his reaction is a pure rave:

"I have been playing hockey games for years, and have yet to find anything as viscerally satisfying as playing Blades of Steel on the original NES...until now. EA Canada has really amped up the fun quotient with NHL 11, focusing on getting the balance right between gameplay and presentation, between difficulty and simplicity. The result is the most satisfying hockey videogame experience to date."

Woah, as good as Blades of Steel? Amazing! Check out the rest of our NHL 11 review  right here.

The last nhl game i played a lot was 2001 and I downloaded the demo for this and a lot has changed since then. I couldn't get into it. Not saying it's a bad game, but i was terrible at it.

The PAX 10: Retro City Rampage

Remember the name Brian Provinciano. Why? Because he's been laboring for years working on Retro City Rampage. You might not have heard of this game yet, but you're going to. It'll be coming to the Wii and "other platforms" sometime later, and when it does, you're in for a treat. Somehow Brian has figured out a way to plug an 8-bit stream directly into the gaming / pop-culture center of your brain, and turn it into this magical video game.

PAX 2010 Preview: Jam City Rollergirls

The last time I traveled to Jam City, I made a left on Peanut Butter Lane and ended up in the land of Sandwich Deliciousness! But that was just a wonderful, wonderful dream. In real life, I played the upcoming WiiWare title Jam City Rollergirls at PAX 2010 and was impressed with the racing game's lighthearted style and fast-paced, Mario Kart-like action.

The game allows you to play as different real-life roller derby crews from all over the country (Although hometown favorites the L.A. Derby Dolls are not included) and mix it up with other roller skating chicks in a battle to the death...or to the highest point total. There is a single-player mode and dual-player mode, but the split-screen multiplayer is the way to go, so that's what I played.

Disney Guilty Party Review:

Wideload Games’ mystery solving title Disney Guilty Party promises to add a little Clue-inspired whimsy to your Wii lineup, but as our reviewer Scott Alan Marriott found out, finding the fun ended up being an unexpected mystery all its own:

“This is one of the sticking points in Guilty Party's story mode, as you have to basically collect all 16 to 20 clues found within each environment just to obtain the necessary evidence to solve the case. It's boring and overly simplistic, as the order of the people you talk to or where you should go doesn't seem to matter. Once you've completed a case in the story mode, you open up the level in party mode, which is where the 'real' game lies. Party mode does away with the story mode's static case structure in favor of a more strategic experience with randomly generated elements.”

Check out our full Disney Guilty Party review right here.
