Rogue Warrior Review

Great video game ideas in action, rule number one. Whenever possible, hire Mickey Rourke to do the extremely vulgar voice acting for your game, as in Rogue Warrior, based on the real life of veteran soldier Richard "Dick" Marcinko. Is it a case of gilding the lilly and adding to an already great game, or the only thing that makes the game worth playing?

Well, reviewer Paul Semel waded into the fray to take a look, and this is what he had to say about it:

'Rogue Warrior is a first-person shooter based on the life of, and the autobiography of the same name by, Richard “Dick” Marcinko, a veteran U.S. soldier who served with the Navy SEALs in Vietnam, and later formed Red Cell, who were tasked with testing the security of bases, submarines, and, most famously (or embarrassingly, since they managed to infiltrate it), Air Force One. In other words, an interesting character. Oh, if only we could say the same for this game.'

Well, that certainly doesn't sound too encouraging. Perhaps you should read the rest of the review and see what score it got, so you can accurately assess for yourself whether it's worth playing. Come back, let us know. We're curious to see what you think.

Richard Marcinko was a veteran U.S. Sailor NOT A SOLDIER. There are only Sailors (and by extension the Marines in the Marine Corps) in the Navy, and only Sailors or Marines can join the U.S. Navy SEALS. I know most people don't know the difference, but it hurts my eyes and ears every time people mixes up the U.S. Armed Forces. So, in review: Sailors serve in the Navy. The Marines serve in the Marine Corps (a division of the Navy). Soldiers serve in the Army, and Airmen serve in the Air Force...

The march towards Christmas continues, with the next few weeks packed to the brim with holiday parties before people head across the nation to spend time with their families. Somehow, though, I'll find time to play some video games. Specifically, I'll be hopping into the Animus to make more progress in Assassin's Creed II. Ezio's adventure is a long one, but I have to admit: I have no interest in seeing it end anytime soon. What are you playing this weekend?

Star Trek Online will be packing a great deal of large-scale multiplayer battles, but how will everything coordinate in the midst of all the Roddenberry-inspired chaos? To illustrate the finer points of the "Fleet Action" mechanics, Atari has released the following trailers to provide the proper answers.

Uh massive space battles in the TV Series and Movies? Which shows were they watching? Massive space battles were actually pretty rare in the shows and movies. First Contact had a massive fleet battle, that was about it for the movies I think.

Anyways, more of this I see the less I want to play it.

Sony Working On UMD Transfer Service For PSP GoIf Sony wants to keep the PSPgo relevant in the marketplace, it needs to take a good hard look at its current pricing model for downloadable games. That’s the advice that Traveller’s Tales founder Jon Burton offered during a recent developers event, Pocket Gamer UK reports.

“I own a PSPgo but don't want to buy LittleBigPlanet, for instance, as I can get it 20 percent cheaper on UMD from Amazon and could resell it once I'm finished with it. But if I download it, I get no discount, and no chance to resell - how annoying is that?” said Burton.

In addition to questioning the lack of resale potential of digitally distributed games, Burton predicted that Sony will end up “making PSPgo games much cheaper than the UMD version,” because if they don’t, “the PSPgo will die.”

Assuming that packaging and shipping costs account for a significant part of a retail game's price, it seems totally reasonable that Sony should offer downloadable versions of PSP games cheaper than their retail counterparts. Then again, Sony isn’t known for being quick to realize the correct price point for its products, so don’t expect to see cheaper PSPgo games popping up on the PlayStation Store anytime soon.

If you think digitally distributed games should be cheaper than retail copies, what price would you like to see for them?

Letter From The Editor: On The Brink of 2010

That’s it. I’ve played them all. (Okay, mostly the good ones.) The mad rush to get everything under the belt to declare game of the year winners is over and I’m nothing but a more confused man for it. As I write this, we will be beginning the initial balloting to come up with the short lists in our categories which will be posted on the site Monday. You can begin your quibbling then and prepare to crescendo to a fever pitch on the 15th of December when X-Play will have our Best of 2009 episode.

But with all these games behind me it’s time to turn to 2010, and honestly, outside of games, I’m more than happy to put the last decade in a box, never to open again. One of the titles that pleasantly surprises me is Brink, which has been up on our site all week long. I’ve been aware of the game for some time now, but it wasn’t until we received the videos that I fully appreciated how ambitious the title is with campaign-based multiplayer from both sides of the conflict, resulting in the chance that you are actually playing against other people as you proceed through the story. This has been attempted before but has never come to fruition. In fact, it does make me think of Sony Online’s well-intentioned Planetside, but not in the failure way. It puts in perspective that the dream of the MMO-Shooter should be slowly approached with baby steps. Also, I finally put together what the game reminds me of visually: Timesplitters. Check out the videos and lemme know if I’m crazy for thinking that.

The end of days will be the end of mankind. This is already promised in THQ's Darksiders. However, that doesn't mean you'll be alone as you venture into a post-apocalyptic Earth. On the contrary, the following video depicts the "colorful" bunch that will be hot on your heels.

Around the Net 12.03.09 »

We've never thought about it this way before, but Around the Net is almost like a super hero, but instead of fighting crime, it fights boredom. You know how Batman has a utility belt filled with smoke bombs and batarangs? Well, in ATN's utility belt there's odd movie sex, Star Trek babble, action stars turned law enforcers and vulgar dolls. Yes, ATN, like the caped crusaders from the funny books you love so much, fights every day to make the world a better, funnier place.

Find the direct video links from Around the Net on Attack of the Show after the jump.

Uncharted 2 Multiplayer Gets

Uncharted 2: Among Thieves multiplayer fans looking to mix things up a bit this weekend will get their chance thanks to Naughty Dog’s “Experimental Weekend”...experiment. In light of suggestions submitted by players during a recent poll, the developers have decided to incorporate two of the most requested playlist options into multiplayer: “Plunder Only” and the “Crushing” playlist's lowered health meter.

So from Dec. 4 through Dec. 7 at 11:00 AM PST, players will be able to participate in a “Plunder Only” playlist, and all players, regardless of playlist, will start with 65 percent health (Boosters will remain available). If those sound like your kinds of experiments, then I guess we’ll know where to find you this weekend.

Dragon's Lair Available On iPhone

Eventually, every single game you have ever heard of will be playable on every format ever invented. Like old-school Laserdisc arcade game Dragon's Lair. This game caused quite a stir in the 1980s with its cartoon graphics, it's flashy presentation and its near un-play-ability, and Electronic Arts has just announced that the game will be available on the iPhone.

While it's hard to imagine a more frustrating experience than playing this game in an arcade for $.50 a throw, it was fun to watch other people play it, and it might be kid of fun to revisit it for free, while riding the bus. At least you won't go broke trying to get past the first couple screens!

No word yet on a release date or price, but check out EA's Mobile Gaming Facebook page for updates!

Mass Effect 2

According to Mass Effect 2 producer Adrien Cho, the gaming sensibilities and perspectives of modern gamers have shifted dramatically this generation, and as a result, gamers have become used to being “pampered” by developers.

“Just recently, a game like Demon Souls is fantastic because when you die, and you fail, it’s not because the game was cheap. It’s usually because you didn’t do something properly,” Cho told Video Games Daily to demonstrate the kind of experience that isn't being offered to gamers as frequently as perhaps it should.

Cho went on to defend gamers though, saying, “I think gamers want a more sophisticated game, they don’t want a breezy game where you see all the cinematics and just put in your hours and play it through.” And that’s why you can expect to be reloading recent save games fairly regularly in Mass Effect 2.

But challenge is just part of the equation, because without meaningful consequences to accompany those challenges, what’s the point? To that end, Cho said that ME2 will feature “some serious consequences. Delicious consequences! You’ll have to play to find out."

I never got around to playing Mass Effect, so I can’t comment on the game’s difficulty curve. In fact, the most common complaints that I heard were related to elevator rides and vehicle controls. But if any of you have an opinion about the game’s difficulty, I’m all ears.

Hey, it's not lazy to gift people with DLC this holiday season. Just tell them you're getting them in on the wave of the future, and quietly celebrate the idea that you'll have more time to do some gaming of your own.

Check out these downloads, presented by Adam Sessler and Morgan Webb, and including Guitar Hero: The Touch, Burnout Paradise, Fallout 3: Broken Steel, Fable 2 and GTAIV: The Ballad of Gay Tony.

Konami Dates Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker For US -- May 25

When Konami Europe confirmed a late-May release date for Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker, which came shortly after Konami Japan announced mid-March release date over there, it was inevitable the American side of Konami would soon follow suit. That news came through just now, with Konami revealing Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker lands on PSP in the United States on May 25.

Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker picks up where Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater left off. I wasn't a huge fan of Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, but the third installment was a personal favorite, easily rivaling the original game (we're talking the original Metal Gear Solid, mind you).

You didn't like MGS4? What the hell is wrong with you? I guess you aren't a fan of the MGS series. Because MGS4 was a huge huge game, filled with content just for fans. Old characters coming back into the game, visiting old places like SHADOW MOSES ISLAND! You sir, are mentally insane for not liking it.
