As many of us head to the airport, headphones firmly in place (with a DS in a pocket, naturally), for this week's round of holiday travel, take solace in knowing this: there's another edition of Feedback to keep you company this week. Whether you're starting to plot out gifts for the rest of the holiday season or contemplating an impulse-buy during the slew of Black Friday sales, Adam Sessler, myself, Abbie Heppe and Dana Vinson gathered earlier this week to discuss the best of the best from 2009!

Feedback -- Thanksgiving Edition »

Here's what the crew talked about on this week's Feedback:

  • For the PlayStation 3 owner in your life, how do you pick between Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, Rachet & Clank Future: A Crack In Time, inFamous and Killzone 2? We're here to help.
  • But what if they only have a Wii? Don't worry, we help you sort through both New Super Mario Bros. Wii and Metroid Prime Trilogy for a balance between cutting edge and nostalgia.
  • It's pretty likely they're going to have an Xbox 360, too. With Halo 3: ODST and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 populating the online leaderboards, there's some serious competition.

Feedback, suggesting violent games for the holidays since...well, ever. Bring joy and subscribe:

I love the opening rant(s) but most of all Patrick's \"what are we doing?\" I laughed for about 5 minutes solid.\n\nAs for giving Uncharted 2 as a first gift, I would never do it, I haven't played the whole game but know enough to know that it would kind of set the proverbial gaming bar to high for a first time gamer offering an borderline cinematic experience. The ludicrous amount of polish that is in the game it would make most all the rest seem lacking in a jene se qua sense of immersion...

Deciding what to buy can be a daunting, stressful endeavor. Especially in these challenging economic times. The gaming industry has expanded in recent years and, as a result, offers even more choices on where to spend your hard-earned and ever-more-precious money. If you haven't already, take a gander over at X-Play's Holiday Buyers Guide for our game recommendations, then look below at some more specific gift ideas for the gamer in your life (and yes, you can count yourself).

Gifts For Giving With General Purpose

A/V switchbox -- Depending on your TV (or your audio receiver), you might be running out of A/V inputs if you're running multiple consoles. If you've used up all your plugs, look into a switchbox and get multi-tasking. Make sure it's component at least...the HDMI boxes are going to be a bit more expensive.

Harmony remote -- Admittedly, the Harmony remote is kind of ridiculous. But in that "I can't remember how I ever got along with out it" way. One simple press of a button will activate all of your electronic components and Xbox 360 (the Wii doesn't support it, and the PS3 needs an adapter), set them to the correct inputs, and you don't have to leave the couch. Setting it up via your computer is not quite as simple, but the reward of reduced movement is worth it.

Harmony Remote

Cheap cables -- Do not, repeat, do not, pay full retail price for A/V cables. If you do, we will be sad, because that's less money you can spend on actual games. Instead, check out monoprice.com or Amazon for reasonably-priced equipment (HDMI and component cables, specifically).

Netflix subscription ($8.99 one disc/month + streaming or $10.99 one/disc month + streaming + Blu-ray access) -- The PS3 just joined the Xbox 360 as a Netflix-enabled movie stream machine. You'll need to request a disc from Netflix for the PS3, but when it arrives, there's a feast of television and movies waiting for you. Save money by taking the 1-disc option...you'll have plenty to stream while you wait for your next disc.

Accessory manufacturer Datel is calling Microsoft out. In October, Microsoft announced the next dashboard update would eliminate support for "unauthorized devices," essentially removing compatibility with memory units that weren't manufactured by Microsoft. As the only notable company producing memory units besides Microsoft, this directly impacted Datel's bottom line. Microsoft told G4 the reason for the change arose from consumers using the devices to cheat.

In a 21-page lawsuit filed against Microsoft, Datel claims that Microsoft told the company its devices would no longer work on Xbox 360s because of an "unintentional effect" of the latest dashboard update. Referencing the story that appeared here, Datel noted that's not what Microsoft told me.

"Microsoft goes to great lengths to protect the Xbox 360 and Xbox LIVE service from cheating, which is the primary purpose and use of these unauthorized MUs [memory units]," said the spokesperson at the time. "Unauthorized MUs are not tested for compatibility or certified for safety and compliance standards and thus could damage customer’s Xbox 360 consoles."

Datel alleges the move represents a "technological step backwards, which harms Xbox 360 users" and is "nothing more than a pretext for forcing consumers to purchase its own overpriced memory cards." Furthermore, the company believes its memory units do not "encourage cheating and disabling the [memory units] will not prevent cheating."

Microsoft offers a 512MB memory unit for $29.99, a 60GB hard drive "starter park" for $99.99 and a 120GB hard drive for $149.99. Datel's 2GB memory unit is $39.99 but holds 2GB of data.

When contacted, Microsoft declined to comment on the lawsuit.

"Thank you for requesting a comment from Microsoft on the lawsuit filed by Datel last week regarding the memory card issues with Xbox 360," said a Microsoft spokesperson. "However, Microsoft must politely decline your request, as the company is not commenting on the lawsuit."

You can read the entire 21-page lawsuit courtesy of TechFlash.

In the middle of writing up a story about superannuation discovering an early video for the currently unannounced follow-up to Mercenaries 2: World in Flames, Electronic Arts decided to make the whole situation official. Mercs Inc, which EA says is very much a working title for the project, is currently in the early stages of development at Pandemic's "new home" within EALA.

Mercs Inc will be the first Pandemic-branded game from EA following Pandemic's official dissolution. It will be produced internally at EA but carry the Pandemic branding.

EA released no details on Mercs Inc, but the leaked video suggested the next game would adopt a focus on cooperative and competitive multiplayer amongst more than two players.

It's currently unknown how many of the original Mercenaries team are on this project.

Mercenaries 2 was a huge letdown after the fantastic Playground of Destruction. As long as they put in the team that did the first I'll be satisfied but if they just make a Mercs 2.1 I'll be pissed. \n\nwww.goarticles.com/cgi-bin /showa.cgi?C=2222539

Capcom Reveals Resident Evil 5: Gold Edition, Slate Of Downloadable Content

Capcom may not have publicly announced what the second Resident Evil 5 downloadable episode will be called, but the publisher had to tell others -- and Internet sleuths followed the trail. According to Resident Evil 5: Gold Edition's breakdown at the British Board of Film Classification, the second downloadable episode for Resident Evil 5 will be called Desperate Escape.

Resident Evil 5: Gold Edition collects all the downloadable content into one retail package. That bundle will be released on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 in March, but the downloadable content itself will be rolled out in waves before that. The content is not planned for the PC right now.

Of course, the name Desperate Escape doesn't include "important" details that explain what exactly players will be doing during Desperate Escape...but hey, it's a start.

All this talk of Resident Evil 5 is just reminding me I never finished the damn game.

Welcome to Morning Hangover -- an excellent way to start your day with the crew at TheFeed...no matter what you're recovering from. Every morning you'll hear musings from our editors and have the chance to share your thoughts on what's going on in the gaming world.

Many of us (yours truly included) will be spending a significant amount of time at the airport over the coming week. It's a time to pretend Xbox Live and PlayStation Network don't exist and get reacquainted with the DS and PSP. What game will be occupying your time over the Thanksgiving holiday? I'll be hopefully checking out Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story. My last experience with the series ended in tears, as a battery error resulted in a saved game with dozens of hours of progress being erased. I haven't been able to develop the courage to return...until now. It's been long enough.

The pain....has healed.

I knew there would be a heated response to my argument last Friday that Infinity Ward and publisher Activision did not provide enough of a detailed warning about the "No Russian" sequence in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. Even though I stated multiple times the sequence represents an important milestone for the medium, many readers disagreed with my criticism that players should have been allowed the option to better learn what was potentially "disturbing" and "offensive."

I wanted to highlight some of the counter-arguments readers made and respond to them today.

This is dumb who gives a cr4 p about if 18+ people (no point in the kid argument since it's the parent's fault not the game's) accidentally see this stuff. Nintendo Quiet On WiiWare Demo Details And Future, Developers Happy With Change

You can download a demo for every Xbox Live Arcade release. Sony doesn't mandate demos on PlayStation Network, but these days, it's uncommon to see a downloadable released without a slice of the experience available for free. Nintendo's WiiWare service hasn't include any demos -- period. That changed last week, as Nintendo announced demo versions of World of Goo, BIT.TRIP BEAT, Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: My Life As A Dark Lord, NyxQuest: Kindred Spirits and Pokemon Rumble.

The experiment spans both first and third-party releases on WiiWare. I contacted several studios with demos now on WiiWare, but all were hesistant to discuss details of the new policy. Nintendo is notoriously secret about its internal workings and this situation's no different. All developers I contacted were unable to disclose how they were picked by Nintendo or how demo content was decided.

Nintendo provided little clarity on the subject when asked, only telling me it "works closely with game developers" to create the WiiWare demos. As for whether demos would continue past this initial wave, Nintendo was mum, telling me that explicitly that no decisions had been made about the future.

WiiWare developers, however, were quick to tell me how happy they were about the decision.

Demos are a good idea, I already have Nyxquest, which is an alright game but lacked any pulling power with same location and enemies and I couldn't connect with the character for being so small on screen, and world of goo, which is fun, once through. I downloaded all the others and will be getting two, but not bit.trip.beat. I do not see the appeal of one sided pong with rhythm, maybe 40 years ago it would have been a nice change.

Left 4 Dead 2

Valve is not a company to sit around twiddling their fingers. As with most games these days, Left 4 Dead 2 didn't come out of the gate "perfect," but Valve has already issued a patch for the PC version to address some issues that users have been reporting. Gamers who purchased Left 4 Dead 2 will automatically see the patch applied when Steam is booted up.

The major changes in this patch include...

You act like FPS is the only gaming genre out there Crashdummy. Just thought I'd make a note of that.

I will not deny that FPS gaming has been in recent times, superior on PC. However this was due mostly to the ability to quickly maneuver your character with a mouse, rather than clumsily rotating yourself with a thumbstick, etc.

Those times have passed though, and with adjustable sensitivity and other features (RB button for L4D; 180 degree spin) in most games now, there...

PaRapp The Rapper Creator Sees Musical Potential For Project Natal

Outside of touting developer support and a handful of new demos, Microsoft has kept tight lipped about what's happening with Project Natal. The motion add-on is widely rumored to be launching next fall but details remain scarce. It looks like we'll get a few more tidbits soon, however, as Edge noticed two Natal-centric sessions at Microsoft's annual Seattle-based Gamefest conference in February.

Complete descriptions of each session are below:

Infinity Ward Didn't Provide Enough Warning To Players Before

(SPOILER WARNING: This feature contains explicit details about the plot for Modern Warfare 2)

You're greeted by the screen above when starting a new campaign in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. It's designed to give a heads up about the much-discussed "No Russian" mission.

"Some players may find one of the missions disturbing or offensive. Would you like to have the option to skip this mission? (You will not be penalized in terms of Achievements or game completion.)."

There are two ways to respond. "Yes, ask me later" or "No, I will not be offended." For now, let's set aside the obvious problem that unless you've been closely following the game's development, you don't even know what you're agreeing to not be offended by. But Infinity Ward wants to make sure you're confident about that decision, so they ask it a second time.

"If you answer yes you will never be asked about skipping levels again. (The skip level option will be available in the pause menu.)"

Neither warning provides any context for what constitutes "disturbing" and "offensive" in the typically realism-slanted Call of Duty universe. There is no reference made to an opportunity to mow down hundreds of innocent virtual citizens during a simulated terrorist assault on a Russian airport. When I stood in line at GameStop to pick up my copy of Modern Warfare 2, not only did I wonder how many parents actually read those screens for their kids not old enough to pick up Modern Warfare 2 themselves, but if any would've changed their minds after visiting the ESRB's website.

See, the ESRB's description of Modern Warfare 2's content is a little more explicit:

The game developers should not be expected to give away the plot of their game in order to help gamers decide to choose to play a level or not. The fact that the developers allowed people to choose is amazing in itself. I think by allowing people to choose to play or not is good enough. Anyone who is upset has nothing to hold against Infinity Ward. The game has an M for Mature rating and says there is violence in the game on the box. What more warning do people need? I'm sick of people...

Serious Sam HD: The First Encounter Final Trailer »

It's been too long since Croteam dropped a new Serious Sam game. A proper third entry in the "oh my god there are 900 enemies at once" series is in the works, but before moving forward, Croteam went back to the original and came back with Serious Sam HD: The First Encounter, a remake being released on the PC on November 24. It'll also make an appearance through Xbox Live Arcade sometime next month, but a concrete date hasn't been announced.

Capcom Reveals Resident Evil 5: Gold Edition, Slate Of Downloadable Content

Remember the slate of downloadable content for Resident Evil 5 I wrote about yesterday? In the announcement, Capcom seemed to pretend there wasn't a PC version of Resident Evil 5. That's because the company hasn't scheduled the content to be released for the PC version.

"No plans for PC at this point," said a Capcom spokesperson to me this morning.

Capcom has been a surprisingly strong supporter of the PC platform and digital distribution in the past few years, traditionally releasing PC versions of its high-profile games a few months after the console versions. This year, it happened with both Resident Evil 5 and Street Fighter IV.

If you want the extra content, such as two new single-player episodes, you'll need a console.

Capcom Revealing Super Street Fighter IV Character Soon...Who Is He/She/It? In addition to bringing back fan favorites from Super Street Fighter II Turbo, Capcom is padding the lineup to Super Street Fighter IV. According to Capcom's Japanese blog for the game (via Andriasang), another character unveil for the sequel update is coming, though Capcom's obviously keeping quiet on the specifics.

Capcom teased an image with Chun-Li, which you'll see to the right. There doesn't seem to be a clue about who the character is, unless that dark half-circle's meant to suggest...something. They've got me stumped.

Let the guessing begin.

At least it's not a countdown this time.

First of all let me say I love all the G4 staff that loves this game. Second let me say it is not like Capcom to show you a background to get everyone all Rolento hyped. It is probably Adon someone that know one is expecting. Just like the G4 staff was playing Dee-Jay and Juri on a stage that looked just like Dhalsim's stage. The stage has many things about it that point to Rolento. sky line and what looks to be a wrestler holding up a belt in the background. It could be Alex, or Haggar,...

Ubisoft Not Publishing No More Heroes: Heroes' Paradise (Aka No More Heroes HD)

Grasshopper Manufacture made gamers who missed out on the first No More Heroes (or don't own a Wii) happy with the announcement of an upgraded, visually-tweaked No More Heroes: Heroes Paradise for both Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. The original game is going under the high-definition knife and will be released in its native territory in February. There's some bad news, though. Ubisoft confirmed to me it will not be publishing No More Heroes on Xbox 360 and PS3 in the US.

"Ubisoft will not be publishing either of these versions," a company spokesperson told me.

The company did not provide any reasons why they're passing. But just because Ubisoft is passing on the revamped No More Heroes, doesn't mean the HD-enabled versions of Travis Touchdown's first adventure won't show up here, but another publisher will have to step up.

Ubisoft is still behind the franchise, however, as the company will be publishing the sequel on Wii over here. No More Heroes 2: Desperate Struggle is scheduled for a January release.
