Answers to Your Questions
Internet attacks
Ryan in Orangevale, Calif., is running an IRC server. Someone keeps attacking his server. The attacks are so aggressive, he can't access the Internet. He has the IP address of the attacker. What should he do?

Leo and Patrick recommend calling your ISP. Tell it you're being attacked, the attack is preventing you from accessing the Internet, and you have the offending IP address. The ISP will probably block the IP address and contact the attacker's ISP.

You can look up the IP address yourself at ARIN.

Don't retaliate. If you do, you're just asking for more trouble.

Dots vs. pixels
John in Prospect Heights, Ill., wants to know the difference between DPI (dots per inch) and PPI (pixels per inch).

DPI and PPI specify the resolution captured by a digital-image product.
  • DPI represents the dots per linear inch on printed media. It's often used to determine a printer's output quality.
  • PPI represents the pixels per linear inch on a screen or CCD. It's often used to define a digital camera's image quality.

You can't make a conversion of dots and pixels. In other words, x number of dots doesn't correspond to x number of pixels. The higher the number of megapixels, the better the final resolution.
