The original 'Red Faction' was one of the most under-rated games on the PS2 (and PC) when it arrived. Offering an engaging story amidst a huge and destructible alien landscape, it further cemented Volition as an AAA shooter developer. The sequel, sadly, took the series off Mars and back to Earth, and proved amazingly lackluster. For the third in the series, 'Red Faction: Guerrilla', Volition has thankfully brought the action back to Mars, yet they've changed almost everything else.
The Pros
- Huge Martian landscape to explore
- Lots of missions
- Excellent destruction-based gameplay
- Great sci-fi atmosphere
The Cons
- Goofy driving and destruction physics
- Often incredibly frustrating
- Much more linear that other sandbox games
Red Faction: Guerrilla Review--
The original Red Faction was one of the most under-rated games on the PS2 (and PC) when it arrived. Offering an engaging story amidst a huge and destructible alien landscape, it further cemented Volition as an AAA shooter developer. The sequel, sadly, took the series off Mars and back to Earth, and proved amazingly lackluster. For the third in the series, Red Faction: Guerrilla, Volition has thankfully brought the action back to Mars, yet they’ve changed almost everything else.
Get Your Ass to Mars
Apparently, still in the open-world bliss after Saint’s Row 2, Volition felt the world needed yet another game for the now-flooded genre. Red Faction is an open world, third -person action game with plenty of missions and amazing opportunities for rampant destructive tendencies. Yet, beyond that, there are several key differences between it and the average GTA clone.
The biggest difference is the story and nature of your character. Just as with the original game, you play an average guy named Alec Mason who has come to Mars in search of opportunities. His brother is there, but it's instantly clear that things are bad on the red planet. The Earth Defense Force (EDF) has an iron grip on the place, and are rounding up and executing rebels where ever they can find them. The action has barely even begun when Alec's brother is killed by EDF troopers, and suddenly Alec finds himself a rebel in a war he never knew about.
A Man, A Plan, A Sledgehammer
The set-up is pretty basic, but the gameplay is amusingly bent on destroying things for scrap. Scrap is the currency on Mars, and you get it by demolishing buildings, vehicles, and any other structure you find. Explosives are a great way to make a building collapse, but your trusty base weapon, the sledgehammer, is the real workhorse. It's a silly premise for gameplay and nowhere within the realm of reality, yet there's a palatable joy in hitting something until it falls over.
Aside from hitting things with a big hammer, there are plenty of missions across the huge Martian landscape. Mars is divided into five huge zones and the object is to remove the EDF's hold over each zone before the Red Faction rebels can safely move on to the next. In reality, you can drive around all you want through the enormous world, although until a zone is opened, you can't get any missions there. Missions include a lot of destroying EDF property-type goals, but you'll rescue hostages, race against time to stop informers, protect civilians, and discover the secrets of the pirate marauders who haunt the outskirts of the planet.
As you destroy EDF property and complete missions, the morale of the oppressed population will improve, and--provided you don't go around killing them--civilians will take up arms against the EDF. While the AI of both friend and foe is certainly not outstanding, it adds a nice layer of depth to see random inhabitants suddenly fighting by your side.
Straight and Narrow
Although each zone has a sizeable number of missions, including random missions that pop up on the fly, where Guerrilla really deviates from GTA, InFamous, and Saint's Row is that there's really not much in the way of moral choices here. Alec is a freedom fighter simply trying to help people while getting revenge for his brother's death. You can kill civilians, but aside from that, you can't really be a bad guy. And while there are plenty of routes to success and a ton of missions to pick from, your ultimate path is dictated by the overarching plot.
Another issue is the cartoonish nature of the action. The driving in the game is pure arcade, with bouncy, exaggerated physics. There's a wide range of vehicles, but most of them control like crazy dune buggies. Knocking a building down around you would seem to be a tactical error, but Alec seems mostly immune to wreckage, though he'll bounce around like a pinball when hit by a car. Finally, the missions can often overwhelm you with attackers and when combined with the wonky physics, lead to a lot of frustrating reloads.
Rounding the package out is the great multiplayer. The third-person action, fun weapons, and building deconstruction translate perfectly to a deathmatch or team game. Sneaky snipers now have to worry about the very floor beneath their feet. Campers beware. Players can also strap into a number of backpacks that allow for more destruction or protection. The Rhino, for example, allows you to barrel though walls, supporting structures, and fleshy opponents. A number of multiplayer modes also support constructing as a way to take over areas. It’s a crazy mash-up of tearing down and building up just to win the game.
VIva La Revolution!
Overall, Red Faction: Guerrilla manages to distinguish itself enough from the competition to be a fun change of pace. The sci-fi atmosphere and destructive landscape are great, and there's plenty to do. While the story itself is fairly linear, the ways to accomplish your objectives are anything but ordinary. Grab a hammer and get out there. There are a lot of walls and even more heads to crack if you’re hoping to liberate this little red planet.

If I had to give the PC version of this game a rating out of 5 stars it would be a 1. The sound is stereo only and if you set your PC sound settings in windows to anything higher you'll get random very loud sounds from things that arent there. So you have to alter your PC configuration to play this game.... lame. There are numerous people reporting crashes on loading or no sound at all! My personal game crashed every time I tried to get in the loader mech for the mission "industrial complex" in dust. I did everything I could think of to attempt to play the mission differently. No joy. I even updated my video drivers and set the graphics to minimum at 6x4 windowed mode... still no joy! I disabled sounds too and still nothing. So Thats as far as I got in the game before uninstalling it. Did they play test the PC version at all? Some of my friends arent reporting any problems with that specific spot but other random crashes.
Can we please please please stop making 3rd person shooters for the pc? they are lame and hard to control/aim and you feel like youre a fly buzzing behind the character instead of the immersive feel you get in first person view. 3rd person has view advantages yeah but its still not as much fun as a first person game to most PC players.. maybe to console players it is but not pc gamers.
Can we also stop making games for consoles and then porting them to PC? If you make a game for the pc you can add axis controls and aim assist easier than doing it the other way around and trying to remove it.
The control setup is asinine. You have to set a forward and backward motion key on the same device... no problem if you use WASD for movement... but if you use your mouse for walk forward and the keyboard for walk back you have to set up 4 keys to do 2 actions... lame. A casualty of expecting people to play the game with an analog joystick or gamepad. Plus if you use your right mouse button to walk forward the game lags for a second before your guy starts running and then if your camera is facing a different direction than your guy, he runs in a circle and causes you to fall off things half the time... lame. Oh and when you aim down the sights most of the time you have to hit the button 3 or 4 times to undo the aim down the sights and see who's shooting you... lame.
Im not sure if there were/are any patches for it... I was never prompted to download any in game, couldnt find any online and there was no way to tell the game to look for uploads as far as I could tell.
The dev's touted the physics as real world style physics. Well when I destroy 90% of one of their silo style "homes" it will litterally hang there with the bulk of the base blown out and one little section holding it up... hit that once and it falls straight down... lame.
What the heck were the dev's thinking when they thought up the tiny little red bar at the very top of the screen for a damage scale? yeah I can see that in a fire fight with 5 guys and explosions going off all around me... sure...
The geomod engine used to be all about terrain deformation... why is it now just building destruction? If I wanted just building destruction id play warmonger or some other physics game like Unreal Tournament 3.
The save game system makes absolutely 0 sense for a pc game. You can save anywhere but when you load you load back at your safe house... why not just have the ability to save the game ONLY AT THE SAFE HOUSES??
The last negative aspect that I'll cover is the control of the vehicles. its like driving on ice to drive in this game... and why do all the other vehicles drive at 10mph and my car instantly goes 100mph and Im running into the other cars? I didnt think this was project gotham racing I thought it was red faction... Oh and you can run just about as fast as the other vehicles drive if you sprint constantly.... lame.
Now onto the few good things. With my system (i7 920 running @ stock speeds, nvidia 8800gtx, 6gb ddr3, and a velociraptor 300gb hd) I had almost no slowdown during high action/destruction like so many have reported. I am running at 12x10 at very high graphics settings and getting about 20-25fps constant.
I love running up to a soldier and smashing him with my sledge hammer and then running off! lol! The destruction of the buildings is major fun and the concept of the game is sound... guy whos brother was killed by soldiers who are crushing the freedom of the people (parallel to the Iraq war?? dev's are socialists i'll bet) goes on a rampage... good concept... fun concept. Execution falls flat though.
Bottom line on this game ... once you get by the cool graphics and ability to knock down all the buildings (not destroy really but break them into pieces that you cant smash further) the game is full of fail... no wait let me rephrase that ... PHAIL!
franklinism
wow you have no life if you took the time to write so much bull. so bottom line you "PHAIL"
gambitjuggalo
