God of War Collection: A Comparison
By Sterling McGarvey - Posted Nov 20, 2009In preparation for the upcoming God of War III, Sony has released God of War Collection, a compilation containing both God of War and God of War II on one Blu-ray disc, as well as a download voucher for the God of War III demo. Both games have been remastered at 1280 x 720 resolution with anti-aliased graphics and 60 frame per second action, as well as trophy support for each game. G4tv.com won’t be running a scored review of God of War Collection, but we’ve set up videos with highlights from both God of War and God of War II’s opening boss battles so that you can see the difference between the PlayStation 2 classics (running upscaled on a 60 GB PlayStation 3, of course) and the remastered Blu-ray versions.
If you’re not familiar with the first game, please watch this 2005 trailer for God of War:
Here’s a video laying out comparisons between the PlayStation 2 version running on a PS3 and the newly remastered game for God of War Collection, narrated by yours truly:
And if you’re still on the fence about the quality of the 2007 PS2 sequel, here’s a look at X-Play’s video review of God of War II:
And in the vein of the God of War comparison video, I present the God of War II comparison video, also narrated by yours truly:
I’ve done my best to let the videos speak for themselves, but for any PlayStation 3 owner who has never played either game, I emphatically recommend picking up the compilation. Both games are among the finest titles of the PlayStation 2 era, and thanks to a facelift and fluid animation, have aged wonderfully compared to, say, many PlayStation 3 launch titles. God of War Collection is among the best remastered compilations released in a long time.

there's no significant difference if im correct up-scaling a ps2 game with your ps3 brings it up to HD so what Sony did was, do that already for you on a hard copy and added trophies support. just that sony up-scaling it manually is slightly better
elminino
i only going to play it to get the trophys and because this game it ... goo

There IS a significant difference . I can actually see the difference in these videos and that's watching it on the crappy quality of "HD" internet video, so logically the difference must be even more noticeable when run through actual HD.

I'm playing it now. It looks real good to me.

I dont know, what do you think Sterling? I already have both God of war games on ps2 discs and I dont see much of a difference between the two. The God Of War collection looks a tiny bit better, especially at the hydra impaling scene, but I dont know if its worth hashing out another 30 or 40 dollars. What would you do?

personally im probably going to trade in my ps2 versions in at game stop and some other games for it. i unfortunately dont have a backward compatible ps3.

there isn't much of a difference. i reluctantly traded in both my god of war games because i don't have a backwards compatible ps3. i've put a deposit down months ago for the collection because i just love both games and having the abilities to get trophies is a little more incentive to get it. i think they put these out mostly for those ps3 owners without backward compatibility. i think it would be a good idea for sony to enable trophies for the ps one classics downloaded from the playstation store. I think they need to have ps2 greatest hit avaliable for download also.

im buying cause ive only played the 2nd one, never the 1st one, plus the trophies, plus the graphics, plus god of war is just plain badass time a kajillion and a half
hoof_hearted4
o and for those of you who say you cant see a difference, your crazy cause i can see an obvious difference and its 2:30 in the morning and im like falling asleep! :P

Everything got upscaled except for the cut-scenes, both in-game and CG. I guess redoing the cut-scenes would've required way more work.

for someone who's looking to get a ps3 in the near future, this looks to be a good way to be introduced to the ps3 system. unfortunately i still haven't finished the first one: i'm close but i just can't seem to figure out that damn exploding box/spiked floor puzzle. i might just have to forget the first one and skip right to the second installment. So the second GoW looks to be their remastered pride and joy. excellent: should be enjoyable to play GoW 2 on ps3
