After some a few misfires and some relatively okay attempts, the Smackdown series returns to form with WWE Smackdown vs. Raw 2010. With a heavier push on user-generated content, it's the first game in the series to truly embrace sharing of fan-created wrestlers, finishers, and now, your own storylines. Although there are some misfires and unaddressed long-term issues, it's among the best wrestling games this generation.
The Pros
- New Grapple system provides new depth to gameplay
- One button counter-reversals are a vast improvement
- Top-notch presentation
- WWE Community Creations is a real game-changer
The Cons
- Collision detection still imprecise
- AI still has brain farts
- Online still has lag and balance issues
- Limitations to Story Designer hurt its potential
The Smackdown series has seen its fair share of ups and downs, with the games seeing some stagnation during the transition from the PS2 era to our current HD generation of gaming. Yukes made some decisions that felt a bit regressive when it came to feature sets, and gameplay adjustments were minor at best in many regards. Enter WWE Smackdown vs. Raw 2010, which shakes up the franchise with some much-needed updates to reflect the capabilities of this generation.

Welcome to the WWE!
The first noticeable improvement in SVR 10 is the presentation. It’s evident that Yukes has studied other sports games to create its inviting in-game menu. Now, like EA Sports titles such as NBA Live and FIFA, SVR 10 starts up in a training ring, where you can test drive the new movesets, or brush up on gameplay if you haven’t picked up the series in some time. It’s a smart move that helps drive home the improved accessibility.
SVR 10 carries plenty of subtle touches that lend authenticity. Pull off enough “Whoo”-worthy Ric Flair chest chops and welts will start showing up on your opponent’s chest. If you open up your opponent’s face, his blood will eventually show up on you if the action keeps dragging out. They’re small but effective features that, like the end-credit Smackdown and Raw moments during Road to Wrestlemania -- complete with color commentary sign-off and a fade to black mid-brawl, help sell the credibility of the WWE experience.
Slimming Down Is the New Bulking Up
But, like many sports sims -- only the uninformed would lump the series in with fighting games -- the devil’s in the small details, and SVR 10’s new systems are arguably the biggest improvements to the franchise in years. For starters, the counter-reversal system has been remapped to a single button, rather than “grapple reverse” and “strike reverse” buttons. It really streamlines the process of protecting yourself from attacks. In addition, the grapple system has seen some big improvements. If you lock your opponent into a strong grapple, you can hit a few buttons to keep the grapple going while you move around him/her. For example, if you lock in a front grapple but want to perform a belly-to-back suplex, you can tap a few buttons and shift the right stick to move yourself into position. These two elements maintain the complexity that wrestling fans want without convoluted mechanics.
The More Things Change...
The overall grappling and reversal mechanics have seen some big changes, but some of the problems that have plagued the series from the beginning are still there. Collision detection is still awkward at times. I watched as Triple H put his entire hand into The Big Show’s belly during an abdominal stretch. Rope physics aren’t so hot, either. At times, feet clip through the bottom rope, yet other times, it’s a weapon. Although SVR 09 put a heavier focus on tag teams, it still has brain farts -- if the Undertaker has me in a suplex and is walking around the ring to my corner, shouldn’t my partner bum rush him to break the hold? That’s a problem when you’re dealing with specialty brawls such as six-man tag matches. AI inconsistency has been an ongoing problem for the series, and although it’s better about certain elements, it’s still a long-term work-in-progress.

Are You the Next Stephanie McMahon?
Outside of the ring, sim-focused misfires like 24/7 Mode have been flushed down the memory hole in favor of WWE Story Designer. It’s here that hardcore wrestling fans will sink hours upon hours into the game. Ideally, not only are you the GM of your show, you’re also the booker. You can micromanage feuds, match types, and conditions for matches. If you’re anal retentive enough, you can even tweak cinematics down to whether your superstar ends up in a brawl after cutting a promo, or whether you’re going to escalate tension in other ways. It’s ridiculous in scale -- you can theoretically book up to a decade’s worth of programming -- but a little myopic in scope. For example, if you want to book your created superstar to fit within your stories, you’re very limited in the number of times you can use him or her. Otherwise, it’s a deep mode that’s designed to satisfy the urges of fans looking for that extra degree of personalization.
Character customization is vastly improved, as well. The depth of create-a-superstar extends beyond prior games and nears the anal-retentive detail seen in Neversoft’s games. You can even create alternate outfits for your created talent. In conjunction with last year’s Create-a-Finisher, you can also edit the movesets for current superstars. If anyone on the WWE roster changes a specialty move or finisher, you can go in, tweak his moveset, and adjust accordingly. The level of detail for what the user can do is quite impressive.
Millions of Comic Book and Anime Characters!
The biggest additions to SVR 10, overall, come through user-generated content and how the game distributes it. Make no mistake, wrestling games have been at the forefront of fan-creation for over a decade, but developers have been slow to capitalize on community-based creation. With WWE Community Creations, you’re now able to not only upload your superstars and highlight reels (added last year), but also finishers, screenshots, and most importantly, created storylines. It’s a huge leap (albeit one we should’ve seen years ago) for the franchise. I can’t vouch for the total quality of what’s been uploaded at launch (the user-uploaded plot I test drove was hilariously awful), but the technology is finally there to share.
It seems like SVR tradition that online has its ups and downs. SVR 10, for all of its offline fun, seems to clunk along when you factor in Xbox Live or PSN. Is it because the inherently imbalanced nature of the game breaks when you put it into an online environment? Is it because the canned move animations (a Smackdown staple) break up the flow of the action when you’re staring at someone putting you in an unbreakable move for several seconds? Or the lag that creeps into matches at inopportune moments? There’s certainly an audience that loves playing against other people online -- and they’ll love wrestling in SVR 10’s numerous online match modes, warts and all -- but at this point, that audience knows who it is, and if you’re not willing to put up with it, you’re better off playing on the couch with in-the-flesh friends.

On This Day, I See Clearly…
After years of awkward development on HD consoles, WWE Smackdown vs. Raw 2010 is a matured game. Despite some persistent annoyances -- clipping and collision detection problems, dumb AI, and spotty online -- the amount of care that’s been put into refining the grapple system and counter-reversal mechanics is more than evident here. Plus, WWE Community Creations updates the series to the demands of today’s consoles. SVR 2010 is the Here Comes the Pain of this console generation. It’s a huge leap for the series, and one well worth playing if you’re a hardcore WWE fan. Just spellcheck your story dialogue before you upload it, please.

Any way Well at least Yukes won't make any mistakes like what they did with the Smackdown Abomination game Just Bring It...which is still the most hated game in my collection.

So the Review I just read says very little about the Actual Issues, this should fix that.
The new Royal Rumble is a great addition, having little mini games rather then just button mashing for eliminations is way cool. It also makes avoiding elimination from 2 or more people possible! Anyone who had 2009 knows unless you had mechanical thumbs, or a turbo button, it didn't matter how fresh you were if 2 people tried to eliminate you you were gone.
The No Hud helps to enhance the overall in game experience making the screen less cumbersome and giving you a genuine feeling like you are in the squared circle. The lack of a damage icon also makes it so in online play people have less ability to get the quick wins we all know and loved.
All in all 2010 also raises the amount of moves you can hold, and that is a great feeling. Seamlessly moving from different grapples gives a technical feel that previous incarnations no matter how hard they tried could not give.
Storyline creator makes me OVERWHELMINGLY excited. This single feature makes the game a true WWE experience. It also gives numerous re-playablity options, including the ability to run storylines with your friends.
Smackdown Vs Raw 2010 has for some reason chosen to take out features that in the past gave the game its truly "Fun" appeal. First off there is nothing anyone can say they have ever liked about the SVR games more then the character creation and customization. The game is truly a leader in this aspect. Last year we had the ability to create entrances, also a Winner! This year, we get that AND the ability to create entrance movies! Mix that with this years great new Soundtrack and we have a winner yes? Wrong. For some reason after giving us ALL these great pieces to the puzzle, they took away the Most important one and made these pieces utterly useless. Who wants to spend the time to create the perfect entrance and the perfect CAS and the perfect entrance movie, if you have to use Batista's music over it! The Idea of giving all of these choices is so that you can make your char UNIQUE! A similar epic fail comes in the CAS itself. You got all these great Uniforms/outfits/clothes. Now you would think if a shirt is 2 toned, I would be able to choose what color I want each of those? Negative, and the color changer makes it so your color choice for most occasions are Obnoxiously bright, Black and Brown. Not to mention when you are in the Storyline, after you have taken 2 hours to create your perfect char.... Vince tells you to go to the costumer, and you find yourself wearing what? Yuppers thats right, a bright yellow 1983 Midnight Rockers outfit. What is that? I get it, give me the experience of working with Vince by having him force me to wear stuff I look stupid in, however you just spent 4 years creating the ability for me to play Dress up for hours with my char before ever throwing a punch. For the love of god AT LEAST SAVE it for me!
All in all these things I'm talking about may seem trivial compared to the work they put into all of the rest of the game. However IMO these things Im talking about should have been common sense. Your decision to create a game catering to a specific fan base is dually noted, however CARE about what we like! We Keep buying the game so TRY to give us what we want at least!

To say that this game is the here comes the pain of the new generation consoles is taking it a bit too far. This new road to wrestlemania which is essentially story mode is terrible compared to what the story mode for here comes the pain had. Personally I hate the linear story line stuff as well as the objective stuff during matches. (Land a move off of the ladder). I felt like it was a little bit of a let down compared to previous story modes that other smackdown games had.
The gameplay however is a big improvement. Much more refined and much more enjoyable. The gameplay for the royal rumble was amazing and thought the new elimination system was incredible. Same goes for all the rest of the matches. First blood you can now attempt to bust the opponent open by using the pinfall button and your character will start throwing punches at the guy's head. Gameplay gets a 5 stars.
This game would be perfect if it had GM mode.

Its a great game and my favorite wrestling game of all time so far

Alright folks this game is NOTHING COMPARED TO HERE COMES THE PAIN!!!!!!!!!!!! For goodness sake im tired of people saying that. Im not trying to be a smart guy or w.e but ive been playing the wrestling games since the sega days. Games like smackdown 2, no mercy , smackdown here comes the pain , smackdown vs raw 1 , were GREAT AMAZING GAMES because simply they had the creating things like create your character entrance etc, there story mode took a while to complete with one character, it was an actual season mode, with CHOICE !!! You could lose the match or win , w.e it may be each outcome had a different path. WTF HAPPEN TO THAT!!! BRING CHOICE BACK INTO STORY MODE! BRING BACK THE SEASON MODE HAVE IT ACTUALLY GO PAST WRESTLEMANIA AND CONTINUE PAST WRESTLEMANIA! All in all game is great love the online features and sharing created moves, players, videos etc. Gameplay is awesome could improve on the annoying targeting system , need to bring it back to how it was. Rumble feature is awesome , everything is great but the road to wrestlemania and please, the career mode is so dull and just awefullllllllllll

djwick89
ummmm ... no one mentions the mistake in the first paragraph?
OMG_WTF_BBQ
The best wrestling game ever is WWF No Mercy for N64, I got that on my 7 birthday.
XxNextGenGamerxX
this is just a show right? not a sport.
this game wouldn't sell well here in sweden, we want high quality games like mod 2, assassins creed 2 and much more
curberus
You need to add The Cons list that even with the nice graphics and realistic presentation they still can not make championships to actual size.
ShockWaveNews
This game would get 5 out of 5 from me if they wouldve fixed the Freezing Bugs in the game. The CAW Road to WrestleMania is the Main Culprit while the Championship Scramble match freezing before the match starts if you put a CAW in the match is the accomplice to the crime. Also the fact that even still to this game they still havent added the secondary entrance vid for the entrances and they havent added the Divas being busted open, look if they want to make it "more realistic" like theyre always claiming to want to achieve, then they would know that sometimes women bleed in Wrestling matches Just as much as Male Wrestlers get busted open on occasion. and Lastly, for the PS2 version, How come training Facility was left out of this? they had more than enough room to leave that in, it would slowed down the quick process of unlocking everything in 1 day, 2 day tops.
bloot10
has anybody seen the part in Shawn Micheals Road to Wrestlemania SPOILER WARNING were JBL shows the retirement video that part is hilarious with all the previous games shown in it
Zenen174
its a good game i am going to get it for my PSP
djwick89
so, anyone else STILL seeing collision detection errors? and why haven't they fixed how stiffly characters move? little more fluidity and WORK on the fundamentals, a little less gimmicks, would be nice.... But then again, this is a WWE game, gimmicks might be all they have left.
Nightshade386
The load times for user created content are atrocious. Utterly unacceptable. I can get up and go to the bathroom, come back and the first entrance music isn't even playing yet. And the collision detection is chronically bad in this series, especially with user content. I mean, If I make a larger wrestler and have his wrestle a smaller wrestler I made, the larger guy grabs air but is somehow still able to pick up the smaller guy. Hair goes right through bodies, belts go right through clothes. It's like this every year, and it's kinda unaccepbable in this day and age.
Xargon2009
How about the AI still having brain farts.
And how come you can't still have a trailer for your created wrestler?
Fix the online problem as well.
VIVA LA WWE.
