E3 2009: Bigger? Better?
Posted By: John Manalang - Friday, July 18, 2008 8:20 AM

Let's face it, even though we have brought you a metric ton's worth of E3 2008 coverage this week, it's not the same show we have seen for the past decade. We've brought you hundreds of streaming videos, headlines and dozens of hands on demos, but don't deny that you don't miss the spectacles and all those previous E3 extravaganzas. And oh yes, the babes of multiple booths (Tecmo where art thou!?).

But we're not alone as executives and analysts have spoken out their opinion on this year's show. "I hate E3 like this," said EA CEO John Riccietiello. He added that if the ESA's convention continues on its current state that EA might just bail and hold their own private event. We know that E3 wouldn't be the same without the world's biggest third-party developer. Ubisoft President Laurent Detoc couldn't have said it any better: "The world used to come to E3. Now it's like a pipe-fitters show in the basement."

Damn, that's harsh! The Electronic Entertainment Expo is supposed to be presented as a AAA quality game, but now it's beginning to look like a great title that everyone will overlook. But as long as the show keeps pumping out great titles we all can look forward to, count us in. And for damn sure you can count on us bringing you all the details.

We could see some tweaking here and there, though, to bring a bit more glitz to the show, and we're conifdent that future years will get the show balance exactly right. How about you? What do you think about this year's E3?

I feel the same way. I love the E3 in the past and this whole new way of doing the E3 must be hell for reporters, game companies, developers, Short changing and not giving the developers time to who off what they have is really bad for business. We don't see it as consumer, but I'm sure the people in the industry are very upset with this E3 format. E3 supposed to be like the best amusement park ride you have even been on. Not a carnival ride. I really do hope that ESA looks into this problem and start to make changes for the better. Even though the conferences were good for one and not the other, I feel like it was really rushed. Christmas will be upon us and E3 is the highlight for the gaming industry. They need to make it better.

Actually, the opposite. From an "insiders" Perspective, this E3 was pretty awesome in terms of us (G4) being able to bring you (the gamers) what you want.

I agree when it comes to E3 not being what it was. I miss the old E3. I do have to give kudos to G4 for doing such a great job in covering the event. I believe you guys really made the viewers feel as if they were there checking out the content themselves. I am looking forward to watching again next year.

The glitz is great, but honestly this format works fine for me. All I want is game news....babes are nice but you can find those anywhere

I can see it from both views.

g4 is happy because they didn't have to sit in long lines of sweaty, smelly, fat kids to get a couple of minutes with a game that never would have made it to video. We would just have to read about it and wait for developers to put out their own trailers and hands-on footage.

On the other hand, we as gamers at home, couldn't really feel the hype of E3 like in previous years with lights and girls and craziness. and there were no smaller booths of independant developers and gizmo inventors and kooky things to entertain.

I liked it, but I can see a need for a happy medium of the two shows.

I miss when fans could go and watch as there favorite games were unveiled right in front of them. I will never forget the look on peoples faces the day Bill Gates first showed the world the Xbox. Now, its lame. Where are the Suprises? The Big annoucements? The freakin FANS?!? The reason that they even have E3...

E3 is not the same. They need the fans, they need exitement, but more importantly they need what games are all about, fun!

I think they should balance the attendance. I mean, it's about a week-long event. Have the first couple of days be press-pass only and whatever, then the last couple be open to the public. That way, the bidness part can get taken care of, then the fans can get taken care of.

And yeah, add back in some of the other fun and crazy. That's what E3 has always been ABOUT! WOOO!!! I didn't see a single cos-player in there. Though I rag on Cosplayers so much, they still have a place in this crazy world...

They need to let the public in, and as far as titles getting over looked, if developers make a great game it will not get over looked

This year's E3 was ehh.

I want the spectacle that it was back in 1999 when they released the Dreamcast. I want to see huge elaborate booths, hot babes, good games, and Adam Sessler running around the floor showing us all.

I'm glad, only since I can't actually attend, that the focus is on showing us what these games promise.
Big round of applause for G4's coverage!

More than likely due to them only allowing members of the press into the event. They need to allow the fans to come again, to bring interest back to the event.

I loved the way they used to do it. The entire thing open to the public, then having special "press-only" presentations and sessions.

If G4 does as good next year with the coverage as they did this year, and the great games keep coming, I'll keep interest.

Make it public and it will fix the problem. OR invite game design/graphic design students.
