The Loop: TiVoNet?
Posted By: Eugene Morton - Thursday, April 03, 2008 12:00 PM

The TV and internet have rivaled each other for the attention of consumers for over a decade. Now, thanks to a new service from TiVo, the two technologies are merging. TiVo has developed technology which enables subscribers to watch internet videos from YouTube and other sources on their TV.

It sounds like such a development would be a boon to the company, but it could just become the next Apple TV. Will TiVo succeed at bringing the internet to your television?

To answer that question, we’ll welcome the Vice President of Product Marketing for TiVo, Jim Denney.

Anyway to get new porn on my 52" Plasma sounds like a good idea to me.

The biggest problem is that Web TV tried the same thing maybe 10 years ago. TiVO has the moeny to waste, but it won't catch on.

xxemogonewildxx - Really? I just watched this clip on my 61" DLP using TiVo Web Video. I *LOVE* this feature, I watch a LOT more vidcasts now than I used to because this makes it so easy. I setup a subscription to a slew of podcasts and they show up on my TiVo just like any other Season Pass. And I get to watch them on my big screen, not my laptop. It is great.

Not that there aren't some issues with it, it is the first release of the feature, but it is very easy to use and it works well enough for a first rev.

And since you can have it monitor any folder on your PC for auto-transcode and auto-transfer that could also be a BitTorrent folder, for example. Just about any video you can get on your PC you can get on your TiVo. And if the video is HD it will keep it HD (720p) if your transferring to a TiVo S3 or TiVo HD.
