Fat Men in Sailor Moon Costumes

Anime.

People really love anime. People really love cutting themselves and watching Two and a Half Men, but loving something doesn't necessarily make it good.

On tonight's Loop, Kevin gets right down in it and talks about this cartoon phenomenon with the experts. He'll be joined by Screenwriter Jon Gibson, Anime Fanatic Heather Dugger and Jonathan Mays, Editor of the Anime News Network.

Maybe if you're good they'll be a squid and a school girl too. Maybe.

Anime doesn't suck. However the Liscened Anime that G4 chose for its Anime Unleashed block did after the the merger. In my own opion anime is just another way of expressing emotions through film. But where people often go and make rash judgements on anime is by looking at filth like yugioh, Dbz,and pokemon and trying to compare it to great animes like Ghost in the Shell,Monster,Samurai X,and more.

Any who wishes to get into anime needs to find a genre similar to the one they like in live action and start there.

What I truly hate is the fact that Yupat only named off the really famous Animes that everyone knows about, Anime is one of those obsession that people only watch to get in good with other people, what happened to doing something because you actually like it?

When people talk publically about Anime I never hear about shows such as Read or Die, Hellsing, Dragon Half, Zaion or Kimi Ga Nozomu Eien, all I ever hear is Naruto, Trigun, Full Metal Alchemist.

Do some research on Anime people, you all just find the most famous Anime, and then kiss its ass, even though it pretty much sucks. :/

Some of these guys are absolutely right most people only watch what is on the cartoon network and other tv, but if you have netflix or something like it, for instance it can open a whole new world for anime because it gives you the ability to research and watch lesser known anime that can become some of the greatest cartoon shows you will ever see, but you won't know unless you look around.

Anime doesn't suck. Anime is only good when they're well-balanced mixes of story, characterization, and action, like with Bleach, Hunter X Hunter, and Inu-Yasha. However, they only suck if they're repetitive, have a paper-thin storyline and characterization, are "villain of the week" shows or shows filled with bland, overlong fights, and/or were taken by American distributors like Nelvana, DiC, 4Kids, and hideously hacked-up and ruined for the sake of "dubbing it for children". DBZ is such an example.

Just Like video games Anime often gets a bad rap because people not in the know focus on the bad stuff,(Sailormoon,Pokemon, Naruto) that the hard core fans know are not top quality. If we are to judge different forms of media just by the things that the masses heard of nothing we be good!

Posted by StrongestSaiyan - Wednesday, July 19, 2006 2:49 PM
Anime does not suck at all. Granted some shows aren't as good as others, but that's true with all TV. Unlike American shows that ramble on and on and change the plot just to keep a series going Anime has a set plot and ends when the plot is concluded. I watch Anime because I love everything about it, the stories, music, characters, everything. Honestly, it's far more creative than a lot of shows made here. With so many different shows and genres the possibilities with Anime are limitless.

If you like anime, you like anime. If you don't, then whatever. But just because you watch the English dub of Naruto and InuYasha does not make you an anime freak. I'm glad that people get excited over something ((even if it's something that slowly consumes your life.)) But I'm tired of people just saying "anime sucks. Anime is horrible. Only weird people watch it." ((God, I remember someone who decided that my friend and I were of the race "Otaku" because we brought mangas to our first class.)) It makes you sound like a jackass when you do stupid stuff like that, so stop it.

Saying anime sucks is like saying American movies sucks and that's simply not true. 'Shark Tale' is to 'This Ugly Yet Beautiful World' (Dissapointing and rife with cliches) as 'Good Night and Good Luck' is to 'Monster'(Awesome and captivating).

Anime is awesome Dragonball Z is great as well, well at least the japanese version and I think Samurai X is great as well once they translated into american and water it down it looses its feel. But dont say that DBZ sucks because many will disagree the same way as many have disagreed that anime sucks.

I never heard of anime until I was stationed in South Korea in 2000. While there the TV choices were limited to CNN, anime, and korean soap operas. While there I started watching shows like Rurouni Kenshin(Samurai X) and Fushugi Yugi(Mysterious Play). I actually began to enjoy them a lot. Even after coming back to the states I have colllected many other sereies to include GITS: Stand Alone Complex 1 & 2, Bleach, Elfen Lied, Shingetsutan Tsukihime, and Monster. I think the problem in the US is that people associate anime with the stuff meant for 5 year olds like Yugi-Oh, DBZ, Pokemon, and One Piece. Many anime series are made for adults just like sesame street is made for a different audience than CSI. The stuff that G4 played and the stuff Cartoon Network plays is also usually had the crap edited out of it as well and here on the west coast they play it at 12 AM.

Animes are just kiddy cartoons.

Posted by I_know_1thing - Wednesday, July 19, 2006 4:15 PM
I like anime, but not the really kiddy stuff. Now that what I think. I mostly hate those anime shows on Cartoon Network. Except when it goes to Adult Swim.

Like anything Anime is something you either like or dont like if you dont like it then guess what....dont watch it. I myself Am a Big anime fan, and yes like every medium movies videogames, etc, etc their is good anime and their is bad anime but for some reason when it comes to anime it all gets lumped together kind of sad to say but it does so saying anime in genral sucks is the kind of thing someone who has No clue about anime would say.

This is what has me infuriated. All that's going to be discussed is translated or TV animes. What about things that haven't made it overseas yet? Granted there are great series available over here, there are great drama, comedy and action titles still strictly available in japan.

This is a unfair discussion without someone who's going to give a valid arguement. Granted I have faith in ANN, this is still not going to be a fair discussion.

Anime doesn't suck. I just wanna comment on something the announcer said, about anime fans being...fanatical. There are always gonna be those crazy people who love something, anything, its not like fanatics are exclusive to football. What about those people who obsess over football, or comics? Anime overall isn't a bad thing. Sure there are some series that suck, but nothing's perfect. It's okay to like anime as long as you dont spend all your time and your whole life on it.

Posted by Kadajkitty - Wednesday, July 19, 2006 4:17 PM
anime is good when is good like Bleach and naruto even though the english dub sucks

Posted by JaxomAden - Wednesday, July 19, 2006 4:17 PM
There are quite a few good anime shows out there, based on what types of shows you like anyway. Naruto is Great, DBZ was good untill after SS1, and personally, Sailor Moon is... I dont even have to say.

Good Anime List:

1. Naruto
2. .hack//sign
3. Cowboy Bebop
4. Samurai Champloo
5. S-Cry-Ed

Not all in order, and certainly not all of them. You get what i'm saying though.

Oh BTW, Subbed Anime is the best way to watch anime.

Anime does suck. It's Japanese, of course, and any culture that frowns upon holding hands in public, yet specializes in some of the most disgusting porn available on the internet, has very little to offer me. It's goofy and weak. Gimme Bugs Bunny and Elmer Fudd any day.

Posted by Snowstorm4477 - Wednesday, July 19, 2006 4:19 PM
I love anime because its something different. Ill go spend money and watch cause so many shows are different in many different way. I love the art and storylines. Last Exile and Read Or Die are the best I've seen so far. Also i like Ghost Of Shell, FLCL, Magical Shopping Arcade. Anime is here and i hope it stays.

Posted by chocokarma - Wednesday, July 19, 2006 4:19 PM
Umm, it depends, certain anime (STORY LINES REQUIERED!) is good, but some, (the kind which has lame stories) are bad, it needs a good story. not just the action packed into most.

Most of the licensed series that the States get are either crap or butchered to the point where it becomes crap. What must be kept in mind is that there are series targeted at all age groups and genres. There are certainly some crappy series. I admit that. But just because of crappy series picks, bad dubs, and over censoring, you can't say that the whole genre sucks.

bleh..i was into anime way back when *thinks back to fifth grade*, but it's so predictable it got borin'...n' redundant, i mean i've only seen one eppisode of Naruto n' was like okay..i saw this character in that super-stars jump game fer the ds, n' just figured not to watch it anymore. anime uses the same elements all the time...there's always a character that's hungrier than shrew, a powerful guy who looks like a phag, n' naive sense of belief to anythin' a villan says *yawns*...i've pretty much covered just the basics..n' all you anime fans, no matter what show you watch can all say your show has these elements..because it's that lame n' predictable

Also, don't claim to know anything about anime if your only experience consists of Dragonball, Sailor Moon, Pokemon, Akira, Digimon, or just about any series aired on Cartoon Network, Adult Swim, G4, Disney, or any other network. They do not represent the whole by any means. Most of the shows they choose are based demographics, fan base, popularity, etc. Some of the best series are sleeper hits and cult classics.

I agree with Yupat, There are some really retarded anime shows like Yugioh, Pokemon, ect, anyway, there are ALOT of really good anime shows Like Inuyasha, S-ory-ED, Naruto, ect, ect, ect. Also some anime in America was alterd for it for the "Younger" audiences, Such as One Piece, Naruto, and many more!

Posted by YamiYaiba - Wednesday, July 19, 2006 4:29 PM
Finally, for anyone that claims that all anime fits in a certain stereotype(i.e. pimptastic_n3rd) the best dubbed series I can recommmend to break that stereotype is Ghost in the Shell. Its mature, complex, serious, lacks almost every stereotype (even the big eyes). Check it out and then make a judgement. You just have to find what you like.

Posted by sanji17059 - Wednesday, July 19, 2006 4:33 PM
Okay, Anime Does not and will NEVER suck. I know why most people dislike anime.

#1) War verterans from the bombing of Pearl harbor hate Japan and eveything from it.

- Now, to these people I must say, hey. They beat you, stop crying and realize that it was WAR! Killing people is what happens in WAR! SO, stop crying over it. Because Japan kicks @$$.

#2) People hate the fact that Japanese animation does not match what they're saying.

- Blame America for being so Darn lazy that they didn't fix it for America. SO Fricken deal with it you yuppy scum-bags.

#3) They think its for kids.

- Hey, look. We're all kids, like it or not. DOn't watch the Kiddie Pokemon stuff. Watch something bloody and gory if it makes you happy. Ghost in a Shell, Kenishin, Samurai 7, Samurai Shampoo, or for you guys out there, Love Hina.

Please people, just deal with it. If you can't, don't wine about it... because like it or not, it's growing.

Be Afraid, Be Very Afraid!

anime dosen't suck, I love anime because it's something not alot of people in my school arn't into and you can find better friends with people that have the same obbsession as you. The anime thats for adults whould be Hentai which is really just anime porn, Hentai gives reguler anime a bad image because if a Parent see's a picture of a half nacked anime girl near all the anime movies then she or he whould not buy any of the movies from that area for there kids but then if you whould go down that row and look at the movies or episodes then you whould see that half of them are not half bad.

Posted by YukiKoneko - Wednesday, July 19, 2006 4:48 PM
Also to add onto my other one I think anime fans are obbsessive because theres so much anime and its kinda like crack one you try it most love it and can't stop while others break the habit at the beguin before it gets worse and is constenly on your mind which is were the obbsisve-ness comes in because they just keep wanting more and more anime till they have experinced it all but people keep making more and more anime every year so the obbsessin continues till anime is stop being produced.

Anime does not suck, like most things it is good to some people and bad to others. People who say anime sucks often refer to anime that is on Cartoon Network or a 4Kids anime. These are watered-down, kiddy animes (with a slight exception of Naruto, which is only slightly watered down). There are plenty of good animes out there, my favorites being Samurai Champloo, Bleach, and Ruroni Kenshin.

Some animes are good, some aren't. It's all in they eye of the beholder.

Posted by No_U!! - Wednesday, July 19, 2006 4:54 PM
Oh boy! Not this question again! My answer is Yes and No! Pointless question! Go understand japanese culture first to know why!

Posted by VictorLePlusFort - Wednesday, July 19, 2006 4:57 PM
I think that overall Anime is very good. Of course there are good and bad ones. But people who judge on how anime is just because they don't like Pokemon or YuGiOh are ignorant. There are Anime for people of all ages. One of my personal favorite is the movie Millenium Actress, which is for more mature audiences than kids of the ages of 10. So, before saying anything bad about Anime, better do some research.

Let try to be sensible people saying anime sucks is a sweeping generalization it like saying movies or cars suck you have good and you have and more importantly you people preferences some people like certain things simple as that, some people like pokemon(I don’t know why) but that what they want to watch. I am currently watching bleach, and the horrible Naruto fillers when will they end. Oh yeah Jamaican anime fan quiet a few in Jamaica and not recent thing we were into since speed racer days. VOMBATUS all over world people make stomach turning porn do what I do, don’t watch it. Oh they don’t hold hands ohhhhhh your lame. Anyway anime like the old Warner bros cartoon tend to have universal appeal.

I'm a huge anime fan, as are many of my friends, but I don't go around telling people to watch anime. Whenever someone tells me that anime sucks, I ask them what they've seen. Usually the response is the english dub of DBZ, InuYasha, or Pokemon. I always challenge them to watch an episode of a different anime, preferrably subbed (in my opinion, almost all eng dubs are lost in translation) to see if it changes their view. I'm not trying to make them an anime fan, I'm just showing them that anime is a enjoyable form of entertainment for all. Many think that anime is for kids (which is fueled by the fact that almost all anime that's shown on US tv is aimed at kids), but there are as many types of anime out there as any other type of tv show on the planet. Dramas, Romance, Comedy, Action, Horror, Educational, Adult, Family...it's all here. From Snow Fairy Sugar to Gantz, Love Hina to Haruhi, Ranma 1/2 to GITS, there's an anime out there that fits what you want to watch. :P

To answer your question, no, anime does not suck. They are not your everyday Bugs Bunny-type cartoons, this form of animation is to the extreme so to speak. I'm into Ronin Warriors, Robotech, Voltron, Transformers, Dragonball Z, and Sailor Moon. The only people who don't like anime are the corporations themselves. I don't like the fact that corporations are taking over the tv networks and cancelling anime and/or butcher anime by making them kid-friendly. The anime shows should be dubbed correctly and left uncut by companies like Geneon, not 4Kids. Bottom line, anime are our life spark, our life force if you will. If the networks take those away, we will grow up being depressed and angry people. I'll be DAMNED if anime is taken away from all of us. Fight The Power!!

I was Weened on anime like Pokemon, when it was the fad the swept the nation, I loved it so much, I wore a very good home made Ash Costume to Pokemon 2000, however, It was soon after that I lost interest, And i looked back and said, WHY did I watch this garbage, I realized that i hated a the weird stuff and only partially enjoyed the battles. For a long time I hated All Anime, thinking it was all the same Swelling heads, angry temples, and battles that took place on streaky line backrounds. I was like this until one night I the premiere of Ghost in the Shell on Adult Swim. I instantly loved it. Finally a show with no giant flaming heads, angry temples, mis matched mouth movments, shouting moves, Flowing battles with no streaky line backrounds, OMG CAN IT BE, a scary realistic future earth storyline, of cyborgs, an AIs. And bein a gadget geek, half of the Computer giberish they talk about is plausible, and GASP* Hair is no taller then 2 inches above the scalp....NEXT POST

my only 2 problems are the robo tank thing(i cant spell it) the sound like toddlers, and how it make the American "empire" look so bad. Like "WHITE MEN TAKE AND NO GIVE BACK, WHITE MAN DEVIL" Im a patriotic person, but then again, it is from japan.
Ok I think that the average television watcher is scared off by the japanese wierdness (see above). More people would watch anime if the day time anime had less strange stuff. Look at Last Airbender, Im not a big fan of te show, the story won't win any awards, but at least there is no weird, and the battles (any after the later half of the first season) look really good, almost with a matrix/karate/elemental feel to them, and ive only seen streaky line stwice, out of 2 seasons.
Ok so in my onpinion, I hate MOST anime, any anime that has any the weird stuff mentioned above, will give most people a hatred for anime that can last for years.

Some random facts about anime:
- The first forms of "Anime"-esq depictions first started with its comic form Manga, which was around starting in the late 17th century Japan.
-In the United States alone; the Anime Industry makes a profit of approx 13+Billion dollars every fiscal year.
-Currently in my own opinion the Market in the Anime Industry is oversaturated.
-When you really think about it, both Anime & Video games goes pretty much hand in hand. For example the .Hack (DotHack) Multimedia project.
-Every year there is a World Cosplay Summit in Tokyo Japan.
-Manga & Anime are very quickly being incorperated into U.S. High School classrooms &Libraries both in school and out.

well unlike SharpEdge I like the werid stuff in anime im a fan of Excel Saga my self along with a few others like Chobits Hellsing Ghost in the Shell I think my frist anime was DragonBall Z to me anime doesn't suck you just have to find the right show that you like some like action Noir or comdey like Love Hina and Ghost Stories and then there's moives like Nausicaa and Spirted Away and its nice that you can watch anime on Cartoon Network or G4 but you can't watch just that and say "I am an anime junkie" go out and buy/rant some DVDS to check out other anime series

Posted by Mexvato1988 - Wednesday, July 19, 2006 6:23 PM
Anime dosen't suck! There are many great anime shows out there, the only reason people say that it sucks is because they compare it to the crappy dubbed versions done by 4kids and others. One example would be the Gundam series and One Piece (Yes I said it, One Piece) The original unedited versions are awsome and aren't suppose to be for little kids. Most of the shows are made for much older audience. If people were to look for and watch the original versions then they too would agree that anime dose NOT suck.

I understand why people from American would be a hurt by being the bad guy in the story of ghost in the shell which was a bit unfair, but every story has a bad guy. Just view it as making a story. Also to see your self as the bad guy may give you a new insight, like any of these things in show got influence in real life or does it show lack of knowledge or good insight on the writers of the show. I didn’t get a anti white man view as I got anti American view.

Anime can't be good or bad. Anime is a style of animation, not a genre. Anime only defines where the animation originated, Japan. Saying anime does or doesn't suck is like saying British live-action films do or don't suck. There are some that suck, and there are some that don't, but you can't say that as a whole they do or don't. Many anime shows do indeed suck, but it's not the animation. It's the show.

You can't just say Anime sucks, it's like saying games or football sucks. Some games are great, and some just plain suck. As with football, many people like it, but also many people don't like it at the same time. The same things apply to Anime. There's good ones, and bad ones. On top of that Anime ranges from childrens, teen, older teen, and adult. Me for example, I don't like many Animes but theres some damned good ones out there...I guess what I'm trying to say is, you can't say Anime overall sucks, because there are many genres etc. of it...

Posted by StylesClash357 - Wednesday, July 19, 2006 7:47 PM
Anime really does suck because, lets be honest, the only people who watch it are little asian kids and asian pedophiles who idolize Michael Jackson.

plus, the only remotely good episodes that come up in good time slots air in Asia.

I give up poeple several people already made the statement about you cant make a sweeping generalization for all of anime but other well say blanket statements in hopes of getting flamed

I don't see anyone giving a crap about russian cartoons... oh yeah, you guys only say something when it's about something well-known, like anime. just because it's popular doesn't mean it's bad. let people like what they like. geez, what's the big deal? and what's worse are you "hardcore" fans who bit torrent gigs of the anime that even the japanese think is second-rate just because you don't wanna be "mainstream." it's just like the dumbass hot topic crowd. they all say stuff like "no, no, i'm not emo, i'm hardcore, i listen to such-and-such underground band!" GET A LIFE!

I was the "anime fan", Heather, that was a guest on The Loop today. I don't think that anime is for little kids because of adult anime called hentai and certain japanese fetishes called "Lolicon" or "Shotacon" which is Japanese manga or comics, that feature underage characters engaging in sexual activity. This is definately not for kids. I am worried about it becoming more accepted in america now that anime is so easy to get, and its so accessable to younger age groups.

I love anime, but that's not all that I think about. Anime is what it is... and will always be. American animation is just as good as japanese animation. I love them both equally. But there is just something that pulls my heartstrings in japanese animation.

Posted by Bumfire007 - Wednesday, July 19, 2006 10:03 PM
to be honest Japanese tastes are rather odd I watched a few animes that made sense during the series but when they ended it was so out there I begin to wonder if something was lost in translations Big O, G gundam, and couple other gundams I wont bother to list. These animes and some others have very hard to understand ending or had hard to understand or sometime illogical dialog during the whole series, where people shout words at each other than talk. Is this just me who thinks this? Strangle enough I perfectly understood serial project lane go fig.

I have seen some anime that I enjoyed...and some that stuck me as pure dren. I guess I'm one of those 'mythical casual anime viewers'. I've liked most of Miyazaki's work that I've seen, but I am also a fan of Ninja Scroll, Wicked City, Vampire Hunter D and a number of other movies who's names I can't remember at the moment.

The anime tv shows I've enjoyed include Big O (the first season...I've never seen any of the second)...although, at the moment, I can't think of any others.

Bugger...should have thought this out more carefully.

Stop watching cartoons most of the people watching it should be watching something better lol ... like G4 or the news ... so anime FTL

Posted by Midnight_Hatter - Thursday, July 20, 2006 12:33 AM
careful maceman, i know some anime fans that would hang you for watching something that was on cartoon network. i'm glad that Heather is cool tough. as far as i can tell, she's the kind of anime fan that i am. i'm really into well-written movies and the same goes for cartoons. i can't stand animes like pokemon that keep going on and on just for the money. i thought there was only 100 pokemon? since when are there 250? 300? and yeah i design cosplayer swords for bleach cosplayers, does that make me a psychofan? i hope not. i hate those guys. but i guess we should be glad that people have passions right? on the other hand, i know a guy that thinks he's a demon just because he watches hellsing...it's important to remember reality. oh, and john mays was a dick on the show.

Posted by Midnight_Hatter - Thursday, July 20, 2006 12:41 AM
oh yeah, and anime inspired the boondocks, which is an AWESOME comic strip. the show drops too my n-bombs for my taste, but the comic still rocks.

Dude. Anime does not suck!I've been a fan for almost 2 years and let me tell you some do suck and some kick butt! But seriously though anime does not suck. There are people out there who do go a little over bored with it but hey, they're just normal regular human beings. I went to the Anime Expo in Anaheim and so many people did the whole cosplay thing. Creepy to me but it's the people's way of having fun. So all in all anime does not suck. :]

I dont think anime sux, but....some anime's do sux.... like dragon ball z..... Yeah pelt me with all your Dragon balls...I dont care... cause it does sux...first of all its too long...who would waste their time....I tried watching...but all it ended with was a two possibly homo guys staring at each other.....

Now, I do enjoy animes like fooly cooly, tenchi muyo,...eh stuff that comes on Action/Cartoon network/ and of course G4...I HATE BOBOBOBOBOBOBOB WHAT EVER THE HELL THAT SHOW IS......

Maybe this is just turing into a DbZ hate comment but it gives one of the bad qualities of anime....

To dragon ball z fans....
Thanagarian Tragedy:" I soon rather Over Dose on Vitmans and go blind from the Vitaman C intake, than watch another eppisode of Dragon Ball Z!"

lol, was there really nothing left to debate on the loop? Ya, all anime's have their ups and downs, but everything does. XD
Just because AOTS or whoever likes their games un anime and all, doesn't mean they gotta go and do this =P

Posted by Kokoro08 - Thursday, July 20, 2006 4:38 AM
Anime doesn't suck.

It depends on who is watching it. Not everyone is going to like anime but that doesn't mean that it sucks.
And yes, some Anime is kid cartoons, but you can't catagorize all of them like that because of just a selective few shows! I know a lot of animes that are WAY not kid stuff.

So it just depends on who's watching. I think some suck and some don't not all.

Gravitation-.hack//SIGN-IGPX -Naruto = GOOD!
DBZ-Pokemon-Bobobo = SUCK!

I personally think that, like anything in life that is categorialized (I hope I spelled that right, or that it is even a real word...), there will be the good, and there will be the bad. Those who say that anime sucks, are just those who have had too many encounters with the bad. And besides, why should we care if others say that anime is the worst thing that they have seen? We should just say "Thank you for your opinion", and just keep watching.

Posted by antiaries - Thursday, July 20, 2006 6:46 AM
Anime and its fanbase is really too diverse to judge soley on what American networks choose to air.

Frankly, if the people responsible for airing anime in the states chooses to stick to shows with long-winding, shallow and contrived plots (Dragon Ball Z, I'm looking at you), then base most of your knowledge about the subject on that, you can't make an educated guess.

Although quite honestly, I don't think they care to do their research (G4) any more than they cared to do their research on what music game came before the other (beatmania and Guitar Hero).

hmmm, i dunno, i see people who are all "naruto and .hack are sweet!" and everyone all "DBZ is for posers" but isnt about taste anyway? you can already tell who the "uberfans" are just by what they post, they defend people who watch anime, but only people who watch "good" anime like what they watch. stop being such hypocrites. i mean, i like DBZ, i hate pokemon, i like GITS, but hate naruto, I like bleach, but hate evangelion. i probably have one of the weirder tastes in anime. anime fans hate me because i hate stories about 12-15 ninjas or robot pilots and everyone else hates me for liking the cool animes like bebop and champloo...oh wait the uberfans hate those too cause they're too "american."

MESSAGE TO ANIME UBERFANS: don't hate on people who don't like anime, or have different taste than you do. some japanese cartoons are better than american ones, but some aren't.

Posted by Midnight_Hatter - Thursday, July 20, 2006 8:39 AM
MESSAGE TO EVERYONE: broaden your horizons. check out an anime if you typically hate the superfans. if you are a superfan, check out some better american stuff. anime has inspired a lot of american art that is much better than it's japanese counterpart. naruto and bleach have some shitty animation quality, but they're still good right? check out the boondocks, which has much better quality animation, just less giant robots and tentacle rape. plus the occasionally samuel l jackson cameo. (snake on a plane rules!)

Here is a list of some Anime that has Violence writen all over it:
Kakugo no Susume (AKA: Apocalypse Zero)
Ima Soku ni Iru Boku
Makai Tenshou (AKA: Ninja Resurrection)
Berserk
Violence Jack
Devilman & Amon Devilman
Riki-Oh OAV 1 (but not 2)
Kite
Mezzo Forte
Hokuto no Ken
Black Lion Samurai
Jubei nin Pocho

One English Anime that I injoyed the most was Spawn the animated series. I love the Blood/Gore and Strong Launage that Todd McFarlane has placed into this Sweet series. So now that everyone has seen my point that not all Anime is all for "Kiddys".

Japanese Anime inspired me to become an artist and a video game designer. If those who don't believe in it, they should go back to the beginning with classics like Astro Boy, Gigantor, Speed Racer, Kimba the White Lion and so forth. Or, know the people who created the characters like Akira Toriyama, Naoko Takeuchi, Osamu Tezuka. Sailor Moon was one of my favorites. But, because of the networks and its licensees, we will never get to see the final season of Sailor Moon, Sailor Moon: Sailor Stars. We will show the world that Japanime characters is like comic book superheroes, they are more than artwork, they are inspirational characters that help us be better people. I'm sure Sailor Moon, if she is real, feels the same way. Fight The Power!!

Not sure if it's been said before or not, havn't really scrolled all the way down. But if you take the time to pay attention instead of dissing on it saying that it's something for kids. You will realize all anime and manga aren't for kids. Gantz for example, sex, blood and gore, language is an example of a mature aim. Plus others may have a kiddy look to them but aren't really meant that way at all.

Posted by Anime_Jason - Friday, July 21, 2006 4:22 PM
AG797 has a point. Anime was never ment to be shown to kids. Anime is only for teens and some adults. Companies like Geneon, Viz Media, FUNimation and ADV Films are doing a good job with maintaining the original quality of anime while other companies like 4Kids are butchering anime and making them kid-friendly. For, example, they use the same voice actors from Pokemon and Yu-Gi-Oh! to voice other characters in other anime shows and even worse, they don't want people like Ryan Drummond to voice Sonic and friends in Sonic X. I mean, Al Kahn (4Kids Chairman and CEO) needs to look at the mirror once in a while realize what he has done. Anime is not a piece of property, it is the very lifespark in not only animation, but in real life as well. Fight The Power!!

Posted by DeepseaWarrior - Friday, July 21, 2006 9:32 PM
I love anime but I don't let it rule my life. Anime is cool and fun, but dressing up character is over kill. I do want to go to an anime expo but I never have time. This is the real world, and people have to work, go to college and pay for it. But if it is cose and I have time to go I will go. But anime dosen't suck, its a new world witch anything can happen and I want to go there. It's my kind of world!!!

Okay, this interview is totally uninformative and way off topic.

What the question ended up becoming was something more along the lines of, "Do ANIME FANS suck?" and not "Does Anime Suck?".

To those of you who are sitting here saying you don't like anime... why don't you actually come up with a good reason, and not just, "It sucks just 'cause, okay!?" That's like your mom tells you to go to your room and you ask why and she says, "Because I say so." Yeah, you never thought that was fair when you were a kid either, did you? Next time, sit down and watch something before you criticize it. I'd at least listen to your argument if you knew how to hold up a good one.

Posted by MarzGurl - Saturday, July 22, 2006 8:54 AM
I'm extremely disappointed in how the cosplayer's appearance panned out. She was given very little room to talk, and from what I hear, she wanted to wear a BETTER cosplay, but it was requested more than once that she wear that particular costume. Then she gets asked questions and isn't even allowed to answer. I realize there's a time restriction, but come on, tell the other guys to shut up for a few seconds and give her time to speak!

On top of that, you realize anime fans aren't the only cosplayers out there, don't you? People of every fandom and every walk of life dress up, chill out and become somebody they aren't. When you go to a convention, you see not only anime cosplays, but also video games, J-Rock, American sub-culture, Internet subculture... heck, I've seen someone cosplay as Dr. Phil! In all honesty, you can't just plop this all down into "anime fandom".

Posted by MarzGurl - Saturday, July 22, 2006 8:58 AM
The sports fan analogy was well brought-in. There are sports superfans that can be scary. But what about music superfans? The kids with the jackets with their safety pins and band patches all over the place? Or the hip hop fans who think that wearing butt-showing pants and walking around rapping to the beat of their footsteps is cool? So I chose animation as my fandom. I wouldn't choose either one of those other fandoms. And they probably wouldn't choose mine, either. And that's fine with me, so long as they have good reason.

Posted by MarzGurl - Saturday, July 22, 2006 9:00 AM
The anime footage shown were from anime video games, and not from any actual anime series. None of it actually showed anything dramatic happening. They were intros from these games - something they put together to make the game look fun and entertaining. It's certainly not something that would make me want to watch the show. If you people REALLY want to see examples, go watch a real show. Look at Cartoon Network's Adult Swim perhaps, though they tend to edit things for an American audience, like we can't handle it.

As far as the other two guests are concerned Anime News Network's editor was dead on, however Gibson was way off base. He was uninformed, and I would have much rather seen a guy who disagrees with anime but at least has knowledge of what's up with it.

Posted by MarzGurl - Saturday, July 22, 2006 9:01 AM
Anime is broken up into many different genres, and you can't dismiss it as either being entirely porn or entirely childish. There's sci-fi, ninja, harem, fantasy, cute high school comedy-dramas, everything you can think of under the sun. There is at least one show out there for any viewer, even if you think you don't like anime. You obviously haven't given it the chance.

Can't any of you think of anime as just another form of story-telling? It's its very own story, it's just that the story teller chose to animate it in a very Japanese fashion. The ones who hate for no reason are really quite shallow.

Anime is not the only things we're fans of, and we all have school and jobs. We live real lives. Anime is our hobby, and it's only our life if we get a job in the industry somewhere.

Posted by MarzGurl - Saturday, July 22, 2006 9:02 AM
And for the one guy (or anyone) who is arguing that they don't watch anime because of what a sick culture it comes from (the Japanese), I ask, what is your problem? Japan is THOUSANDS of years steeped in culture. Us here in America only have a couple hundred years on our back. You haven't bothered to really, honestly, truly learn where this all comes from. And you don't think some of our own entertainment programming is sick and twisted? Shame on you.

I could rip into this for hours... but I'm done. G4 used to be anime friendly, but they've tossed it to the wind and are in fact insulting it left and right in place of pop culture, which isn't what we're looking for.

I found the link to this video after reading the allegations of the cosplayer in the segment- namely, that G4 mislead her, implying that this would be a serious, unbiased debate, and that it was requested she wear her most flamboyant costume and act "really excited and hyper" about anime. It's atrocious that she was set up the way she was, for blatant ridicule.

Bad form, G4. You won't find me watching Attack of the Show any longer.

Anime - just like everything else in the world - only sucks on a case-by-case basis. If you think all anime sucks, then I suppose that's your case. It's an unfortunate perspective, but oh well.

Regardless, any fan of any thing can be just as obsessive. Livejournal icons are a testament to that.

Posted by AoNinja - Saturday, November 18, 2006 3:20 PM
Okay, I'm a fan, but some of you guys are pretty disgraceful. Your reasons make almost no sense. I mean Pearl Harbor? Where the hell did that come from? It's someone's own choice to like something or not. You cannot force someone to like what you like, it's more of a personal taste thing. If someone doesn't like something then so be it. Because saying people who don't like what you like should die is a totally rational thing to say. Seriously.
