Hollywood Make A Good Videogame Movie?
Posted By: Dana Vinson - Thursday, June 29, 2006 12:46 PM

Well, can they?

Video game king Richard Garriott, film guru Chris Gore, and Tomb Raider movie scribe Gary Whitta will be joining us to discuss if Hollywood can pull their heads out of their trendy butts long enough to capture the magic of video games on the big screen or if we'll be subject to horrible adaptations until the sun swallows the Earth and ends humanity.

Watch the cage match go down live tonight at 7PM right here on Attack of the Show.

There has been good video game movies but there has been way to many bad ones. And I think one of the reasons is you got directors and actors who don't know a damn thing about the games before they get the role then try to cram in some research. And some probably don't even do that. Another reason could be they just want to quickly pump one out cause they know it when make money from all the nerds.

YES!! Hollywood CAN make a good game movie, if they just do it right. Frank Miller co-directed the Sin City movie, if they try the same concept and have the game's creators help in the production of the movie it coulld be succesful.

Mortal Kombat was a pretty good movie. When it first came out everyone went to see it.Super Mario Bros.,Street fighter,Double Dragon,Doom, and others suck. Because they think they can make more money by just taking a video game and make it in to a movie.

Well, I think that the problem with video game movie adaptations is not so much the movie themselves, but the expectations of the gamer. Spending hours trying to solve a puzzle to enter a room in Silent Hill (puzzles such as the bag of blood and the talisman come to mind) will not equate to a movie format, so the gamer will obviously be let down.

That's not to say that there are no good video game movies; I thoroughly enjoyed Silent Hill from a movie fan perspective; from the gamer perspective, I was bugged out by crossing elements from later games, changing characters, and introducing Pyramid Head in a time before he was even a part of Silent Hill. But that's from the gamer perspective...we need to learn to view movies, no matter what they're based on, from a movie perspective exclusively.

Okay enough... everyone is talking about the past like someone said "the future"... Halo has a good story line that has a slim chance to be a good movie as long as they find a good director... Then theres the movie I hope they don't screw up... Metal Gear Solid... if (I doubt but I hope) Mr. Hideo Kojima directs it that could be the best videogame movie bar none. Don't (and I beg of you) even argue with it the story line my kinda... wierd but still.. come on!

Hollywood only talks in numbers , i.e.; $$$$ . Whether they see a title that has a potential story line adapted from a video game or not . Can they make a good movie derived from one ? Maybe , maybe not . It all boils down to who's writing the scripts . Take note that when you're writing scripts , you're also writing how the action sequence's form out . Then , it goes to drawing boards that kinda look like comic boards , which will give the Director an idea about how the scene is filmed . I personally think movies like , Resident Evil or Tomb Raider were good ones . That's my opinion . Other than that , Hollywood needs Better writing when it comes to Video Game Movie adaptions ........

I think if they have a deep storyline like God of War. What Hollywood is focusing on is like the action in the movies. If they would take games with a great story thin they could probably make a great movie.

If a movie is really bad no one goes to see it.
If a movie is really good it gets sequals made.
Resident Evil has its second sequal coming out.

So, there has been a good video game movie.

Clarification:
If a movie is good it gets sequals, spinoffs/ripoffs or makes enough money for the studios to greenlight similar projects.

well...the real trouble is protmoting the flick not as "based on the video game!" but as "a kick ass movie that will make you WANT to the play the video game!" let's face it, the only audience that buys into the video game movies are we fanboys, so if the demand goes up and more people are interested, jerks in LA might actually care about things like plot, and character development...maybe even collaborate more with the creators of the game...it's their vision after all...
