If you look around the website where the editors came from, you'll find a really good Super Mario World editor that lets you save your edits directly to the ROM without an IPS Patcher.

Yes do you have to patch the file so that a possible virus might come from it???And do you need to have a nes controller to play it or just a computer controller???

The IPS Patch is installed on the rom, not on your computer. The only purpose of the IPS Patch is to apply the changes someone made in a level editor to a rom.

If you wait a few seconds, it should auto-direct you to the main page of the site where the stuff is. If you scroll down a little and look on the left side of the page, you'll see the downloads section, the IPS patcher, Hex Editor, and Tile Editor is in the ROM Hacking utilities section. The Super Mario Level editor is under the Level Editor section.

For all of you that are new to romhacking, have patience, and start small. I remember I went from making simple graphical hacks to changing the music with a hex editor. Don't expect to make something awesome on the first day. Super mario world I hear is easy to hack, and the original metroid is both easy and fun to hack.

Ok, since alot of you are new at this, let me tell you this REQUESTING ROMS IS ILLEGAL, and generally disallowed at most sites. They are not that hard to find through search engines, top sites, or asian friends, but requesting roms on message boards and such will get you in trouble. While all of the knowlege covered in AOTS is really old the romhacking scene is a shadow of it's former self and it is good to se some people giving it a little boost. Expect to see alot of hacks containing racism, naziism, pixel nudity, drugs, secks, and more. any of you thinking of making a hack like super swastika brothers please realise that there are already alot of hacks like this on the 'net.

Go back to the 1st post in this thread and look for this line "The IPS patch for Super Mario Bros (the game we played on air) can be downloaded here as well." Click on the word "Here" (Sorry for not simply quoting, but I can't post in the forums for some reason. I can only do it from the Attack of the Blog main page.)

1. Download the IPS Patcher software.
2. Download the IPS For "Super Kevin Bros".
3. Get a Super Mario Bros ROM.
4. Extract the IPS Patcher software.
5. Double-click the Lunar IPS Icon.
6. Click Apply patch.
7. In the window that pops up, find and select the IPS Patch for "Super Kevin Bros".
8. In the second window, select the Super Mario Bros ROM.
9. Load the new ROM in an emulator. (Do NOT change the ROM's name!)

You can't get the IPS already attatched to the ROM because that would be illegal. By only giving the IPS and making you supply the ROM, legal problems can be avoided. I'm starting to think that many people didn't pay any attention to the segment about ROM Hacking...

TrigunBebop: I tried patching the ROM using that IPS patcher for OS X that you linked to, and it didn't work. The game will not launch. Thanks for looking though.

I was looking around a few other forums, and there seems to be mixed results from people who used that IPS Patcher for OS X. Some said it worked, but others said it didn't. The only thing I can say is to try to apply the patch to another copy of the rom, and follow the directions carefully.(My rom didn't work the first 2 times I tried.) Other than that, I say don't try to rename the ROM after you patch it, as that has caused problems for me also.

Ahhhh, Project 64, one of the best emulators ever made. I have to say that project 64 is one of the smoothest running emulators I've ever seen. (Keep in mind that it plays Nintendo 64 ROMs, so don't ask how to play Super Mario Bros on it.)

If you have problems running Tile Layer in DOS, go back to the Hack site and get Tile Layer Pro. It is a Windows port.

the files arent openable it just restores the files that are needed to be back its an easier wayu to fix it it just reinstalls the files needed for ms-dos 16 bit.

Ok if you don't even know what a ROM is or how to open a ROM at all don't bother trying to figure out ROM hacking, It's really not that hard to figure out as long as you have some computer knowledge which I can already tell most people that commented in here don't have.

yeah, i think we all need a little help here. the nes emulator provided isnt user friendly at all. i have a very good snes emulator and i learned how to use it in like 2 minutes.

Ok people its not that hard!!!! Download the emulator now use google and find a super mario ROM or if your lazy go here http://www.nesfiles.com/NES/Su per_Mario_Bros/Super_Mario_Bro s.asp (its in the google ad)
Now unzip the emulator and then open the NesterJ.EXE now when the program is open choose File-Open ROM and find the super mario ROM and walla you can play Mario. If you wanna learn how to edit Mario just use the readme included with the mario editor. Want to play the Super Kevin Bros? Just dl the IPS patcher and patch it. now your playing the ver they were playing on the show. I hope i was clear enough.

guys, to play it you need to go get the rom. when you have the .ips file and the rom, rename of the files in the rom, even the ips, to the same thing. it should patch it.

OMG... I used hard reset on NEStopia to reset it instead of soft reset when in the endless level, and it worked right, but the 2nd time I did it, it bumped me into Minus World!!!

Oh, and for all of you trying to do it, I figured out how to do it. go into nestopia (not sure if it works on any other emulator), start a 1P game, and do a hard reset. then enter a 1P game again and do a hard reset.

sorry for posting so much. I just made a photoblog on imageshack with pix of the level. I didn't think that there was a bowser thing in minus world... :P Oh, and between images 4 and 5, I didn't take screenshots for a while because all there was was erratic block placement with no real pattern or design.

Zophar's Domain is dead as a door nail, here's the new place to get started on R*m Hacking right here http://romhacking.deadbeat-inc .com/ that place is better than ZD on so many levels.

Now as far as playing smb1 hacks, I recommend Googie's Rom Hacks, here's his site http://geocities.com/googitoon s/romhacksmain his smb1 hacks are really good. Not only that the levels are challenging, but the eye candy is pretty sweet too. ^_^
