"Antonia" - Anna Wainscoat
Posted By: Scott Moschella - Tuesday, December 06, 2005 4:51 PM
Anna Wainscoat beat out all the other entrants in the Quest for Antonia Contest, a search for the model who most closely resembles Antonia from Everquest II.

Anna not only won a nice pile of cash, she also won a Stuff Magazine photo shoot. Anna is featured in this month's issue of Stuff Magazine and you can download the pictures from the photo shoot on Stuff's website.

Haven't got enough of Anna? We thought so. You can see even more of Anna on the Quest for Antonia website.

DVDuesday 12/06/05
Posted By: Stephen Johnson - Tuesday, December 06, 2005 4:50 PM

Chris Gore, indie-film-genius, Film Threat Webmaster, coauthor of  The Complete DVD Book and gadabout town, is back with his weekly delve into digital digression called DVDuesday. Below are the Gore verdicts on Mr. and Mrs. Smith, The Frighteners, and Star Wars: Clone Wars Vol. II.

Mr. & Mrs. Smith
It’s like a romantic comedy with guns, so guys and chicks will dig it. Commentary by director Doug Liman is kick ass. The other commentary tracks are less compelling, though.

Verdict: RENT

Star Wars: Clone Wars Vol. II
This second disc of the Genndy Tartakovsky cartoon series actually takes us right into the beginning of the story events of Episode III explaining important things like why General Grievous has a nasty cough (Mace Windu force choked him.). There’s commentary, a behind-the-scenes doc on how this “prequel” series of sorts connected story elements to Revenge of the Sith, art galleries and tons of promos for other Star Wars stuff you can buy! If you own volume 1, you kind of have to get this one, so my recommendation is mild.

Verdict: BUY

The Frighteners
This is some of Peter Jackson’s finest work in horror, but I think timing hurt the film when it was initially released as a big summer blockbuster. In addition to an amazing commentary by Jackson, there is behind-the-scenes documentary that offers an inside look from concept to release of the film. There are bloopers, deleted scenes and many behind-the-scenes mini-docs covering every phase of the production, including all the digital effects. Many of the effects techniques developed by WETA for this movie proved useful when Lord of the Rings came around.

On the bloopers, we see a montage of Michael J. Fox takes where he seems to forget what movie he is in and utters “Doc!” as if he is in another Back to the Future movie. One funny thing to note – all of this was done for the special edition laser disc years ago, and everyone in the documentaries refers to the laser disc, which is funny. Well, to me anyway since I still own about 50 laser discs.

Verdict: BUY

Quick Pick:

Murderball
This amazing doc explores quadripalegics who play a violent sport like rugby and compete in the Olympics.  Mark Zupan is one of the athletes who the doc focuses on and it is amazing and packed with extras. Must-see DVD.

Giant Killer Robots
Posted By: Stephen Johnson - Tuesday, December 06, 2005 4:20 PM

How can you not like special effects work done by a company called "Giant Killer Robots?" They're the San Francisco-based effects company behind the recent Fantastic Four adaptation. As Kevin put it, you can say all you want about Fantastic Four, but it looked cool. It looked cool because of Giant Killer Robots, specifically, the groundbreaking work they did with digital flame-simulations. Nice.

Jimmy the Geeks Picks 12/02/05
Posted By: Stephen Johnson - Tuesday, December 06, 2005 1:00 PM

Sportsman Jimmy the Geek was onhand Friday to pick the winners of the weekend's sporting contests through video games. He did not have a very good week. (sob)

First up: Army vs. Navy. Jimmy used NCAA '06 to pick Army over Navy by 7 points, but in real life, Navy ate Army's proverbial lunch. Final Score: Navy 42, Army 23.

In the world of boxing, the Middleweight title was on the line this weekend as Bernard Hopkins battled Jermain Taylor. Jimmy picked Hopkins as the winner by decision in a 12-round fight. But the title actually went to Taylor, who squeaked by with a narrow-margin victory in what the boxing world generally considered an abyssmal bout that coulda gone to either fighter.

This Friday, all of Jimmy's predictions will come true. And I'm betting my kid's college fund on it.
