Chris Gore, indie-film-genius, Film Threat Webmaster, coauthor of The Complete DVD Book and gadabout town, is back with his weekly delve into digital digression called DVDuesday. Below are the Gore verdicts on Mr. and Mrs. Smith, The Frighteners, and Star Wars: Clone Wars Vol. II.

Mr. & Mrs. Smith
It’s like a romantic comedy with guns, so guys and chicks will dig it. Commentary by director Doug Liman is kick ass. The other commentary tracks are less compelling, though.
Verdict: RENT
Star Wars: Clone Wars Vol. II
This second disc of the Genndy Tartakovsky cartoon series actually takes us right into the beginning of the story events of Episode III explaining important things like why General Grievous has a nasty cough (Mace Windu force choked him.). There’s commentary, a behind-the-scenes doc on how this “prequel” series of sorts connected story elements to Revenge of the Sith, art galleries and tons of promos for other Star Wars stuff you can buy! If you own volume 1, you kind of have to get this one, so my recommendation is mild.
Verdict: BUY
The Frighteners
This is some of Peter Jackson’s finest work in horror, but I think timing hurt the film when it was initially released as a big summer blockbuster. In addition to an amazing commentary by Jackson, there is behind-the-scenes documentary that offers an inside look from concept to release of the film. There are bloopers, deleted scenes and many behind-the-scenes mini-docs covering every phase of the production, including all the digital effects. Many of the effects techniques developed by WETA for this movie proved useful when Lord of the Rings came around.
On the bloopers, we see a montage of Michael J. Fox takes where he seems to forget what movie he is in and utters “Doc!” as if he is in another Back to the Future movie. One funny thing to note – all of this was done for the special edition laser disc years ago, and everyone in the documentaries refers to the laser disc, which is funny. Well, to me anyway since I still own about 50 laser discs.
Verdict: BUY
Quick Pick:
Murderball
This amazing doc explores quadripalegics who play a violent sport like rugby and compete in the Olympics. Mark Zupan is one of the athletes who the doc focuses on and it is amazing and packed with extras. Must-see DVD.
