By Dana Vinson - Posted Jul 23, 2009[10:24] Dana Vinson: "Hey everyone! We're here at The Hobbit panel presented by TheOneRing.net..."
[10:26] Dana Vinson: "They should be getting the festivities started in about 5 minutes. Feel free to comment, even though they won't displayed in the window, I'll be able to see them and respond to questions and witty quips."
[10:27] Dana Vinson: "There won't be any video for this panel, just this text stream."
[10:28] Dana Vinson: "None of the panels at Comic-Con can be streamed live unfortunately, except the Star Wars special that G4 has special access to."
[10:28] Dana Vinson: "Ok! Here we go! The panel is underway..."
[10:29] Dana Vinson: "Yikes, according to Chris from TheOneRing, one of the other founders couldn't be here today because he has the Swine Flu."
[10:31] Dana Vinson: "Right now, Chris and Cliff from TheOneRing are giving an introduction to their website. If you want, there's a Cruise to Middle-earth that they are doing in January of 2010."
[10:32] Dana Vinson: "It's 12 nights!"
[10:33] Dana Vinson: "Richard Taylor from Weta is here."
[10:33] Dana Vinson: "Now, they're doing a presentation on "What We Already Know About The Hobbit""
[10:33] Dana Vinson: "Here's what we know about The Hobbit production staff right now"
[10:33] Dana Vinson: "Executive Producer: Peter Jackson"
[10:34] Dana Vinson: "Director: Guillermo del Toro"
[10:34] Dana Vinson: "Composer: Howard Shore"
[10:34] Dana Vinson: "Writers: Philippa Boyens, Fran Walsh, Peter Jackson and del Toro"
[10:35] Dana Vinson: "Artists: John Howe, Alan Lee, Mike Mignola, Wayne Barlowe, Oscar Chichoni, Fracisco Ruiz Balasco, WETA and Spectral Motion"
[10:36] Dana Vinson: "Right now, Cliff is talking about the fact that Guillermo del Toro hangs out on TheOneRing.net message boards, so now you know where to go if you want him to see your funny cat pictures."
[10:37] Dana Vinson: "The screenplay for both films is approaching a first draft. Pre-production is scheduled for autumn 2009 and the filming of both films is scheduled for 2010."
[10:37] Dana Vinson: "The Hobbit *should* enter theaters Holiday 2011"
[10:38] Dana Vinson: "They're 95% sure that Ian McKellen, Hugh Weaving and Andy Serkis are in for the films."
[10:39] Dana Vinson: "Richard Taylor just passed on a message from Ian McKellen..."Just tell them, I'm waiting for a phone call from Middle-earth.""
[10:40] Dana Vinson: "Jackson has said The Hobbit will not be in 3D."
[10:41] Dana Vinson: "The Hobbiton Set is being rebuilt. TheOneRIng.net just got their first "Spy Pics" back. We're seeing pictures of tiny little houses in the side of hills!"
[10:42] Poll: Do you want The Hobbit to be in 3D?
Yes!: ( 8% )
No!: ( 81% )
Do I get to keep the glasses?: ( 11% )
[10:43] Dana Vinson: "They really want to drive home the fact that del Toro spends on time on TheOneRing.net message boards."
[10:45] Dana Vinson: "Right now, they're giving us a taste of some of the artists that will be involved with the making of The Hobbit"
[10:46] Dana Vinson: "Now Cliff is talking about all the movie rumors...First up, the splitting of The Hobbit."
[10:47] Dana Vinson: "The Hobbit will be split right down the middle. The story will be totally finished at the end of the second film."
[10:48] Dana Vinson: "del Toro said "They found a natural place in the narrative" to split the story and said "The dividing place is obvious.""
[10:49] Dana Vinson: "This, apparently, started a flame war on the FAMED OneRing message boards..."
[10:50] Dana Vinson: "Now they're talking about the Dragon. This is the most unenthusiastic conversation about a dragon I've ever heard."
[10:51] Dana Vinson: "They are speculating if the Dragon will be in the first movie, or just in the second."
[10:52] Dana Vinson: "Apparently, they are going to include some of the appendices in the story weaving them in where it makes sense."
[10:53] Dana Vinson: "Video of del Toro, sending a message to us, the people of Comic-Con. He says "Welcome to Comic-Con!""
[10:55] Dana Vinson: "I just almost got into a fight with a guy who took a freakin' phone call during the del Toro video. Have fun answering that when I put it somewhere hard to reach."
[10:56] Dana Vinson: "Richard Taylor from WETA is talking now. His accent is delightful. He's the winner of 5 Oscars, but sounds like he's on Flight of the Conchords."
[10:57] Dana Vinson: "Some of you have asked about Comic-Con live streaming...Yes, Comic-Con has started and no, there is no live streaming. Comic-Con (the governing body that controls this whole show) is extremely careful about what gets taped and none of the panels are available on the web."
[10:57] Dana Vinson: "The only thing we can do are these live blogs."
[10:59] Dana Vinson: "Now, we're getting the straight scoop on WETA from Taylor. He's mainly talking about the production of the other LOTR movies."
[10:59] Dana Vinson: "He can't say much about The Hobbit, except that it's going to be visually stunning and amazing to look at. He also said he extremely excited to be working on it."
[11:00] Dana Vinson: "WETA is totally burried on The Hobbit. They've been working on it for 11 months already. They present twice a week to del Toro."
[11:00] Dana Vinson: "21 full-time artists on staff at WETA."
[11:01] Dana Vinson: "WETA has been working on District 9 too."
[11:02] Dana Vinson: "Quick message about the Halo film. Disappointed it fell through ultimately..."
[11:03] Dana Vinson: "Taylor just made a joke about "Things people from NZ do with sheep" +10 Style Points, Taylor!"
[11:05] Dana Vinson: "Oh! They're showing the WoW statue outside of Blizzard that WETA build. Taylor said it was so hard to do, laughed and said jokingly "it was a sh*t job!""
[11:06] Dana Vinson: "WETA does charity work for the handicapped, gave a double amputee who wanted to swim a mermaid tail. Awesome..."
[11:06] Dana Vinson: "WETA has a new website, complete with a newsletter and podcasts."
[11:07] Dana Vinson: "Now we're in the WETA Cave...they built it to give visitors something to look at besides "they're run down little studio.""
[11:07] Dana Vinson: "AHHHH! Halo toys! WANT!!!"
[11:08] Dana Vinson: "Said Bungie is a bunch of "delightful people." I believe it."
[11:09] Dana Vinson: "WETA has secured the rights to create figures and sculptures based on John Howe's original Middle-earth art work."
[11:10] Dana Vinson: "Yes, this is The Hobbit pannel. Unfortunately, because the movie is still in pre production, they're being incredibly tight lipped about the movie itself"
[11:11] Dana Vinson: "A lot of speculation, but the WETA stuff is cool for fans of the series just because they'll be doing stuff like bronze sculputres of LOTR characters."
[11:12] Dana Vinson: "WETA section is done. Huge applause for Richard Taylor."
[11:13] Dana Vinson: "Special Joker-themed t-shirt with Gollum saying "Why so Precious?" instead of "Why So Serious?" for sale here at Comic-Con"
[11:14] Dana Vinson: "WETA and TheOneRing.net are doing a Comic-Con scavenger hunt. Very cool. Winner gets awesome WETA stuff."
[11:15] Dana Vinson: "They think The Hobbit will hit theaters Holiday 2011"
[11:16] Dana Vinson: "The panel is done! That's it from The Hobbit. Again, mostly speculation, but they said The screenplay for both films is approaching a first draft. Pre-production is scheduled for autumn 2009 and the filming of both films is scheduled for 2010. With the film hitting theaters Holiday 2011."
[11:18] Dana Vinson: "Thanks everyone for tuning in! I'll be back at 1:15 live blogging from Wonder Women: Power Females in Pop Culture. SPOILER ALERT: Ellen Ripley will be there!"
